There has been a long tradition of movies based on video games in Hollywood, but the vast majority of them have been critical flops. Video game stories just don’t transition especially well to the big screen, which explains why Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, and perhaps most infamously of all, Super Mario Bros. are so hard to watch.

FROM EARLIER: Details on the next major Assassin’s Creed game leaked early

On the other hand, relatively recent releases such as Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time have managed to dodge the ire of gamers with competent casts and uncomplicated plots. Ubisoft is hoping to continue that trend with an Assassin’s Creed movie starring Michael Fassbender, now slated to be released by Fox on December 21st, 2016.

The movie was originally scheduled to hit theaters this year, but was delayed without explanation last September. This led many to believe the Assassin’s Creed project might have fallen into the same development hell as BioShock and Halo, along with countless other unproduced video game movies, yet here we are with a new release date.

Fox also revealed that Channing Tatum’s Gambit will release on October 7th, 2016 and The Fantastic Four 2 will come out on June 2nd, 2017. These superheroes will be competing with Marvel’s monstrous Phase 3 schedule as DC attempts to establish itself as worthwhile competition for the current king of theater.
