You rarely see Apple issue a product recall – the company would rather announce special repair programs for faulty products than recall them – but it has just announced one for one of its wireless speakers made by Beats.

Apple has discovered that “in rare cases,” the battery in the Beats Pill XL Speaker can overheat and pose a fire safety risk. The accessory has been sold by Beats, Apple and other retailers since January 2014, which is before Apple purchased the company.

“Customer safety is always a top priority at both Apple and Beats, and we have voluntarily decided to recall this product,” the company wrote. “If you have a Beats Pill XL Speaker, please stop using it and follow the process below to send it to Apple. In exchange, we will provide you with an Apple Store credit or electronic payment in the amount of $325 USD or approximate equivalent in local currency.”

The company urges Beats Pill XL Speaker owners to complete an online form in order to return the device (available at this link). This is the only way to take part in the recall; customers can’t simply return the speaker to an Apple Store or another retailer that sells Beats products.

After that the form is completed, Apple will send a paid box so that the speaker can be safely returned. Refunds will be issued as an Apple Store credit or an electronic payment approximately three weeks after the device is received.
