Apple really wants Beats Music to succeed, which inevitably means it will have to go head-to-head with Spotify, the music service that is now the king of the mobile streaming world. A new report in Re/code gives us some fresh details about how Apple plans to take on Spotify and get music lovers to make the switch to Beats Music.

While there won’t be a free unlimited streaming tier for Beats Music as there is now with Spotify, Apple will offer some limited free streams as well as a free trial period for prospective subscribers. Re/code also suggests Beats Music will have a SoundCloud-like feature that will let users upload “a sampling of songs” that others can stream for free without subscribing. And finally, iTunes Radio will get playlists that are custom-designed by human DJs, not by computers. This is good since the computers in charge of creating iTunes Radio playlists weren’t exactly doing a bang-up job.

Of course, this sort of package isn’t at all compelling if music fans can just get their unlimited fix through Spotify, which is why Apple has been pressured record labels to end their licensing agreements that let Spotify offer a free streaming tier.
