Apple yesterday made a surprise announcement when it revealed that its new AirPods were finally available for purchase. Originally introduced more than two months ago, Apple’s new earbuds were supposed to hit store shelves by late October. That launch date, however, was continuously pushed back as Apple curiously needed a few more weeks to address a few technical problems.
The bad news, though, is that Apple’s initial supply of AirPods is predictably low. In fact, if you attempt to purchase AirPods today, Apple’s online store reveals that it won’t even ship for a full 6 weeks. Notably, the estimated shipping time stood at 4 weeks just a few hours ago, so if you’re at all interested in picking up some AirPods, you might want to pull the trigger sooner rather than later.
If you’re still on the fence, you might want to check out Rolling Stone’s glowing review of Apple’s next-gen earphones. While it’s easy to mock the AirPods based on their unique appearance and an assortment of potential usability issues, Rolling Stone’s praise of Apple’s AirPods was nothing short of effusive.
With respect to the design, the review notes:
They’re almost identical to the standard Apple earbuds included with all iPhones, just without the cord. A bit of the device does extend away from the ear (in part to house the microphone), but it doesn’t look as strange as early critics argued, and wearing them around town I felt a lot less self-conscious than I do with huge-ass over-ear headphones. Most surprisingly the fit was much better than the those standard ear buds, and although they feel as if they could fall out of your ear they never do. They stay planted better than the old earbuds – possibly because a cord isn’t pulling on them.
Hardly a surprise, the review found the intuitive and seamless setup process to be one of the more compelling aspects of Apple’s AirPods. As anyone who has tried to pair Bluetooth headphones to an iPhone can attest, things don’t always go as planned. But thanks to Apple’s clever utilization of the AirPods case as a pairing point, hooking up AirPods to an iPhone is incredibly easy.
