I know what you’re thinking: clickbait title from an app-schilling iSheep. But I promise you: this headline delivers, because this app is solid, 24-carat comedy gold.
Momento is a new, iMessage-only app. It lives as what feels like part of the keyboard in iMessage, and it does one very simple thing: trawl through your photo library at turn live photos or burst photos into GIFs. Using the app is simple: tap on the App icon in iMessage, scroll over to Momento, and you get a scrollable page of thumbnails.
That might not sound like a lot of technology for an app that costs $2, but the results are absolutely worth it. Momento turned a bunch of average photos that I’d forgotten about (mostly of my dog) into cute, funny memories that I could share with my poor, dog-pic-saturated friends.
That’s mostly how the creator, Genady Okrain, envisaged it being used. He told TechCrunch that “as an amateur photographer, I have a lot of experience with photography. I’ve been amazed to see just how many photos people take. All those photos are on people’s devices but no one is looking back on all of them. Momento creates cool GIFs from those photos and that help people remember those old moments.”
But aside from the Mad Men nostalgia device, Momento also works as a piece of priceless comedy. You see, the app first scans for photos it thinks will make good GIFs, and pushes those to the top of its image reel. But if you scroll down, you can look through all your photos-turned-into GIFs, and some of those will prove to be unintentionally hilarious.
