When Samsung triumphantly revealed in its Galaxy Note 7 presentation that the phablet will have a 3.5mm headphone jack in the process, and made fun of Apple’s unreleased iPhone 7 in the process, I said that I’m fairly confident that Samsung will soon copy the iPhone 7. Like it or not, the 3.5mm headphone jack has to go, and companies like Apple have to be at the forefront of such changes so that others follow suit. Well, it didn’t take long for the first Samsung rumors to claim that the company is exploring ditching the 3.5mm connector.

It gets even better than that. According to Geek, Samsung might not be happy with just using the USB-C port for music — something Intel already explained that it’s happening soon.

Samsung is instead exploring the possibility of replacing the headphone jack with a proprietary port. Apparently, Samsung is thought to be at the exploratory stage to see how viable such a move would be.

By owning its own port, like Apple does with Lightning, Samsung would be able to license it to accessory makers either for profit or for free. The bad news for anyone buying wired headphones would be that they’d need a variety of adapters to make the headphones work with multiple devices.

This is still a rumor, so it doesn’t mean the Galaxy S8 will ship without a headphone jack, or with a new type of port for handling music. It just shows that Samsung is ready to copy if Apple once again.
