The Apple TV is a great for watching content from any number of media sources, including Netflix, YouTube and a growing and seemingly endless selection of channels from various content providers. Conspicuously absent, however, is support for Amazon’s Prime Video; which is a shame because Prime Video itself boasts an impressive selection of compelling and exclusive video content.

For some time, it’s been widely assumed that the lack of support for Prime Video on the Apple TV was rooted in Amazon’s desire to push sales of its own Fire TV set top box. This sentiment was only bolstered when Amazon in October of 2015 abruptly stopped selling the Apple TV on its website altogether.

During an appearance at Recode’s Code Conference yesterday, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos attempted to set the record straight on both issues, sort of.

When asked about the topic, Bezos said that Amazon only wants to make Prime Video available to devices under “acceptable business terms.” In turn, Amazon only wants to sell media players that offer support for Prime Video.

“We sell Roku, we sell Xbox, we sell PlayStation,” Bezos explained. “We’re happy to sell competitive products on Amazon and we do it all day. We sell Nest thermostats. When we sell those devices, we want our player, our Prime Video player to be on the device and we want it to be on the device with acceptable business terms.”

“We can always get the player on the device,” Bezos continued, “the question is whether you can get it on with acceptable business terms. And if you can’t, we don’t want to sell it to our customers because they’re going to be buying it thinking you can watch Prime Video and then they’re going to be disappointed and then they’re going to return it.”

While Bezos didn’t expound on what business terms he was referring to, it’s a safe bet that his comment was in reference to the 30% cut Apple takes from all in-app purchases and subscriptions on the App Store.

Apple has in the past signaled its desire to get Prime Video up and running on the Apple TV but it seems that neither party will be willing or incentivize to budge any time soon.
