Making movies based on blockbuster video games isn’t always such a great idea, but the upcoming Assassin’s Creed film doesn’t look bad. The first trailer for the movie was just released, giving us glimpses of Callum Lynch’s story. If you’ve played the games, you’ll have fun seeing this reenactment for the big screen. If you haven’t, then you’re in for a sci-fi assassin story that takes place mostly in the 15th century.

Michael Fassbender plays Lynch, a convict who’s sentenced to death but isn’t exactly killed during his execution. Instead, he’s enrolled in a program with the goal of exploring the past. Fassbender becomes Aguilar, who’s apparently a Master Assassin. That’s how Lynch discovers that his ancestors were members of a secret society of assassins.

Oh yes, there’s plenty of jumping between buildings, jumping off buildings, and lots of sword fighting. Or fighting that involves blades, given that Aguilar is usually wielding hidden blades. Sadly, you have no control of what happens to Lynch or his ancestor. Better fire up that old Assassin’s Creed game or get yourself a new one if you want to be involved in the story.

Marion Cotillard, Jeremy Irons, Brendan Gleeson and Michael Kenneth Williams join Fassbender in the first Assassin’s Creed movie, which is set to premiere on December 21st.
