Weather apps are big business, and it’s not hard to see why. Everyone wants the most accurate weather information as possible, and there are thousands of apps out there that compete for space on your smartphone. Where the iPhone is concerned, the weather app category is particularly crowded, and people often have trouble finding apps that suit their needs.

Well, I’ve tried them all. OK, maybe not all of them, but I’ve used dozens upon dozens of different weather apps over the years in an effort to find the perfect weather experience for the iPhone. After mowing through somewhere between 75 and 100 different apps, I’ve landed on a combination of three that deliver what I believe to be the ideal weather experience on the iPhone.

Fresh Air

This awesome weather app is now free but I paid for it when it was first released. I would pay for it again if I had to.

Fresh Air is the app I use when I really want to check the weather. It uses ridiculously accurate hyper-local weather data from Forecast.io and stuffs it into a fantastic minimalist interface that shows you exactly what you want to see in the simplest possible way.

Dark Sky

Dark Sky is the app hardcore iPhone fans swear by. To be honest, I’m not a huge fan of the app itself — I far prefer Fresh Air. Dark Sky really shines when it comes to alerts, however, and that’s what I use it for.

The app uses Forecast.io weather data and your current location to tell you exactly when it’s going to start raining or snowing in your area, and you can set tons of alerts for other things like humidity, temperature and more.

Weather Underground

The last app in this recipe for perfection is Weather Underground. The app features a pretty good interface that has recently been overhauled, but it’s still going to be overkill for the vast majority of users. The Notification Center Widget, however, is awesome.

Even the best weather apps on the iPhone seem to always fall short when it comes to widgets, but Weather Underground’s widget is beautiful, informative and logical. When I want to check the weather quickly rather than dive deep into Fresh Air, I use WU’s widget.

So there you have it — three fantastic weather apps that will give you the best in-app experience, alerts and widget you can find. For more on iPhone apps, be sure to check out the latest awesome paid iPhone apps currently on sale for free.
