On Tuesday, Ubisoft revealed Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, the next entry in the Assassin’s Creed franchise. The follow-up to Unity will be set in 19th century London, with players taking on the role of Jacob Frye, a gangster who wants to steal from the rich aristocrats and give to the poor working class.
In a 9-minute long gameplay video published shortly after the reveal, Ubisoft walks us through some of the innovations that the team has brought to the sequel. The first addition we see is a new form of travel: carriages. Carriages and trains are both present in this industrial world, which will make getting around the game’s seven boroughs easier than ever.
Speaking of traversal, the grappling hook we saw in leaked screenshots late last year is officially called the rope launcher. Climbing buildings is both an iconic staple of the series and an incredible frustration when it doesn’t work properly, so hopefully this new tool will help alleviate one of the biggest sticking points for Assassin’s Creed.
Halfway through the gameplay walkthrough, we see yet another new aspect of Syndicate — the ability to use the environment to dispatch foes. In worlds as vast as those constructed by the teams at Ubisoft, this seems like a natural progression, bringing new life to your surroundings.
With a new fighting system, new ways to explore and a more interactive world, Syndicate could be the perfect answer to the disappointment that was Unity.
