Microsoft sold 3 million Xbox One consoles in just over a month following the new video game console’s debut this past November, but it probably would have sold even more boxes if its new Xbox were priced a bit cheaper. While the company may someday launch an Xbox One console that costs less than $499 — the Xbox 360 used two price points, after all — Microsoft has no plans to launch a $399 Xbox One with no optical drive this year.

Rumors emerged from a “verified insider” on the NeoGAF forum claiming to uncover Microsoft’s plans for the Xbox One in 2014. While some of the info provided in the string of leaks may indeed be accurate — we confirmed the launch timing of Microsoft’s first software update, for example — at least one item on the long list of leaks was dead wrong.

According to a post on Twitter from Xbox boss Aaron Greenberg, Microsoft will not be releasing a $399 console without an optical disc drive anytime soon. “No, you cannot believe everything you read on the internet,” Greenberg posted in response to the question, “Is this $399 xbox one rumor true?”

That’s that.

Other rumors covered in the massive NeoGAF leak remain possibilities — for the time being, at least.
