Samsung’s upcoming fifth-generation flagship Galaxy smartphone is already shaping up to be one of the highlights of 2014, but a new report suggests that the Galaxy S5 might not be quite as exciting as we thought. Earlier rumors pointed to an absolute beast of a smartphone that would include an integrated iris scanner, a 64-bit eight-core processor and an industry-leading quad HD (2K resolution) display, and at least one version of the new hero phone would reportedly finally sport a metal case, millions of which had already been ordered. One recent report claimed that Samsung isn’t quite ready to launch a metal phone, however, and now leaked benchmark test results point to a flagship phone that isn’t anywhere near as exciting as earlier rumors had suggested.

AnTuTu is one of the most popular mobile performance test providers out there, and a handset believed to be Samsung’s Galaxy S5 just appeared in its data base. This is common, as engineers testing unannounced devices often use popular benchmark apps and the results of these tests are automatically transmitted back to AnTuTu’s servers.

According to a post on AnTuTu’s blog, a Samsung smartphone with the model number SM-G900F — which is widely believed to be one of several versions of Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S5 — popped up in its system this week with specs that include a 1080p HD display (1,920 x 1,080 pixels). Samsung’s HD displays are certainly nothing to scoff at, but recent reports stated that a market-leading quad HD (2,560 x 1,440 pixels) display was headed to the Galaxy S5.

Other Galaxy S5 specs seemingly revealed by the test results on AnTuTu’s site include a quad-core 2.5GHz Snapdragon 800 processor — the Galaxy S5 is expected to sport either a Snapdragon 800 or Samsung’s new 64-bit eight-core Exynos processor, depending on region — as well as 16-megapixel camera, 3GB of RAM and Android 4.4 KitKat.

The S5 is expected to be unveiled early next year, possibly at some point in February.
