What the patents giveth, the patents can taketh away. The Financial Times reports that a Texas jury has awarded Nevada-based software company VirnetX $368 million in damages in its patent suit against Apple (AAPL). According to the FT, “VirnetX claims 45 patents in the US and abroad relating to real-time communications and other security technologies” were allegedly violated by Apple’s FaceTime video chat application. VirnetX, which had previously settled a similar patent suit with Microsoft (MSFT) for $200 million, had initially sought upwards of $700 million in damages. Apple reportedly plans to appeal the jury’s verdict.
