Think that Apple’s (AAPL) products can’t get any lighter or sleeker? Think again. An unnamed source told Japanese blog Macotakara that Apple has “commissioned a product sample” made out of carbon fiber from a Japanese company to determine whether it could be used on an upcoming device. As AppleInsider notes, Apple has shown a great deal of interest in carbon fiber in some of its recent patent filings, meaning that plans to build a laptop, tablet or smartphone made from the material are certainly within the realm of possibility. NEC last week released a seven-inch tablet built from carbon fiber that weighed in at just 249 grams, significantly lighter than both the Amazon (AMZN) Kindle Fire HD and the Google (GOOG) Nexus 7.
