Both Android and iOS saw tremendous growth this past holiday season, with device activations jumping 353% to 6.8 million on Christmas day. On the same day users downloaded more than 242 million new Android and iOS apps according to market watcher Flurry Analytics. During the final week of the year, over 20 million iOS and Android devices were activated, and a record-breaking 1.2 billion new apps were downloaded, according to Flurry. Downloads grew by 60% over the early-December baseline, with the United States contributing to 509 million downloads, or 42.3%. Looking forward to 2012, Flurry expects that breaking 1 billion downloads in a single week will become more common as Android and iOS continue to grow rapidly.
