Signed, sealed and delivered — Microsoft’s Windows Mobile blog has officially announced that the next iteration of the Windows Mobile OS will launch on May 11th. The interim OS of sorts will be unveiled at day one of the Tech Ed 2009 conference next month:

Stephanie Ferguson, GM of Business Experiences at Microsoft’s Mobile Communications Business is going to deliver the kick off launch presentation of Windows Mobile 6.5 on Monday, May 11th at 1:00PM – 2:15PM. This Tech Ed 2009 session focuses on one of the biggest launches in the history of Windows Mobile – Windows Mobile 6.5. It is targeted at both IT Professionals and Developers, with a cool demo and an outline of great stuff to come. Be sure to join us as we are giving away 5 Samsung Blackjack II’s!

For those not keeping score, WinMo 6.5 is reportedly a huge improvement over 6.1 — though some would argue that doesn’t necessarily say much. True Windows Mobile die hards will tell you what a workhorse WinMo can be however, and if 6.5 resolves as many issues as we hope it will (and does so in a much neater package UI-wise) it could be more than just a band aid to tide us over until 7 drops. The venue for the launch, Tech Ed 2009, is geared toward developers so we can expect some fantastic in depth demos to come through as devs pry into every nook and cranny of Microsoft’s latest mobile OS. We have to admit, we’re a little excited.
