The image Sony Ericsson chose to place atop its MWC event invitation could be quite telling. While the world waits impatiently for the PlayStation Phone — which may launch as the Xperia Play — Sony Ericsson is preparing to introduce new members of its Xperia line on February 13th ahead of the annual Mobile World Congress show. That should be great news, but unfortunately it appears as though Sony Ericsson has something other than its PS phone in store. The trendy young woman seen on the event invite could certainly be a beast of a gamer, but we doubt that’s the message Sony Ericsson is looking to convey with this pic. As such, it looks like we may be in store for another round of social network-friendly phones geared toward the young professional demographic. We’re happy to see some nice new social kit of course; maybe even with revamped versions of TimeScape and MediaScape in tow. We would be lying, however, if we didn’t say we’d rather see the gaming goliath everyone has been anxiously awaiting. Then again, perhaps Sony Ericsson will surprise us all and unveil its first PlayStation-friendly phone at CES next month. More →
A new trademark filing uncovered Tuesday suggests that the Sony Ericsson PlayStation Phone may launch as the “Xperia Play.” One of the earliest sources of information surrounding the still-unannounced smartphone suggested that the device would launch with Xperia branding, and this is the first indication that the rumor could be true. The news is anything but confirmed, however. Here’s what we know: Sony Ericsson has applied for a European trademark for “Xperia Play,” along with other trademarks such as “Xperia Duo,” “Xperia Arc” and “Xperia Neo.” One of the company’s PR firms has also registered http://www.xperiaplay.com and several other related domain names. So, it’s a safe bet that Sony Ericsson has something in store for the moniker and while its first PlayStation-equipped Android phone is the obvious assumption, nothing is confirmed at this point. Hit the break for two videos of the upcoming device in action. More →
New videos of the still unannounced Sony Ericsson PlayStation Phone emerged Friday, giving us our best look yet at the upcoming gaming phone. Codenamed Zeus, the Gingerbread-powered Android phone now appears in two very clear videos that reaffirm several rumored features. Moreover, we can now clearly see a PlayStation app that appears to be the device’s gateway into a PlayStation-branded gaming experience. While no games are installed on the device depicted in the videos, the PlayStation app shows a series of tabs that organize games into various lists such as “Recently Played” and “Recently Added.” There is also a search feature and what appears to be a shortcut to the PlayStation game store. Rumors suggest Sony Ericsson may announce the device later this month. Hit the break for the videos.

A new video posted to YouTube Wednesday reportedly shows a man handling Sony Ericsson’s upcoming PlayStation Phone. While very little, if anything, can be gleaned from the video itself, the important takeaway is the very existence of this footage. The PlayStation Phone is now being demonstrated in various corners of the world, which means an announcement shouldn’t be far off. The blogger who played with the phone did have some interesting tidbits to share as well, such as specs that include a 4-inch touchscreen, Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), a dedicated game store, a touch-sensitive control surface on the slider, an 8-megapixel camera and some special PlayStation-themed live wallpapers. He also says that the codename of the device is listed as Zeus, which jibes with earlier reports. More →
