Last year, Joe Hadeed found seven anonymous negative reviews for his carpet cleaning business on Yelp. Unable to verify that the reviewers were actual customers, he sued them and subpoenad Yelp to identify them. 20% of all Yelp reviews are written by paid shills [updated]

How many of the Yelp reviews you read would you guess are forged by the companies being reviewed? MarketWatch reports that 20% of Yelp reviews are fraudulent, typically written by freelance writers from the Philippines, Bangladesh and Eastern Europe who receive between $1-10 for each review. New York attorney general Eric Schneiderman eventually stepped in with “Operation Clear Turf,” a year-long investigation that is culminating in an agreement with 19 companies to stop their practice of forging reviews. The companies will also have to pay more than $350,000 in fines for astroturfing and false advertising. More →

Apple’s new Maps app may integrate Yelp check-ins

Apple Maps Yelp Check-Ins

Apple will reportedly integrate Yelp into its upcoming iOS 6 Maps apps, Bloomberg reported on Monday. The publication cited materials distributed to Apple software developers earlier this month, which depict how the company’s upcoming Maps feature allows users to “check-in” through Yelp without leaving the app or being required to open a new one. The images indicate a partnership between the two companies, however both declined to comment. Apple’s new mapping technology will be available later this year with the release of iOS 6.   More →
