Nokia 5800 XpressMusic begins shipping, select markets only

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic begins shipping, select markets only

S60 fans rejoice – Nokia has just announced that it has begun shipping the highly anticipated 5800 XpressMusic. Woo! Don’t get too excited just yet though, only retailers in Russia, Spain, India, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Finland and a few other markets will be receiving this first round of shipments and there’s still no word as to how the schedule is looking for other regions. Unfortunately, it still looks like potential buyers in those markets can likely look forward to some elevated pricing until year’s end, but those of you who absolutely must have the 5800 can chalk it up to early-adopter tax. The fact that you can brag to your S60-loving buddies in other regions about being the first to get your hands on Nokia’s touchscreen revival should make up for the extra cost, maybe.

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic price gouge explained, still lame

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic price gouge explained, still lame

We’re not sure if anxious Spaniards will be more or less upset by this news, but we now have an explanation of the massive 54% premium found on Nokia Spain’s pre-order page for the 5800 XpressMusic. Like it or not, the extra €150 can be accounted for as follows: a mandatory €100 Nokia Music Store voucher and three months worth of Nokia Maps subscriptions. Sheesh. Apparently each country can basically bundle whatever it wants with the 5800 for the holidays. The base price is still €279 but expect to see various locales use the new handset to increase sales on various ill-performing services between now and the end of the year. How sneaky. Come January, the 5800 should be available solo at the originally-announced and very reasonable €279 price point.

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic available for pre-order in Spain, €150 more expensive than expected

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic available for pre-order in Spain, €150 more expensive than expected

European countries seem to be getting all the little surprises these days. First Germany gets its hands on the BlackBerry Curve 8900 with no warning and now Spain gets a little treat of its own – kind of. Here’s the good news: Nokia’s Spanish site has just unexpectedly made the 5800 XpressMusic available for pre-order. The bad news? The 5800 is listed at €429 as opposed to the very reasonable €279 Nokia announced the handset at. For those keeping score at home, that’s roughly a 54% premium. Umm Nokia, what’s up? If announced prices mean nothing, why not just go nuts and announce your next Nseries flagship at $100? We’re not sure what Nokia’s reasoning is for this pretty drastic price hike is, but 54% is quite an early adopter tax if Nokia is still planning to release the handset at €279.

T-Mobile suspends sales on the Nokia 5610 XpressMusic

By on November 9, 2008 at 10:26 AM.

T-Mobile suspends sales on the Nokia 5610 XpressMusic

According to a T-Mobile spokesperson, T-Mobile is suspending the sale of the Nokia 5610 XpressMusic handset and recalling the entire 5610 inventory, including floor demos and literature, from all stores and warehouses. The issue appears to be a manufacturing problem that affects the display. Nokia has now fixed the error in the current crop of 5610s but the T-Mobile’s supply were all manufactured prior to the fix and still have the design flaw. Unfortunately, at this point, there is no word as to whether the 5610 will return to T-Mobile’s lineup. Anyone whose phone experiences any problems can bring their defective 5610 into a store and get a Nokia 6301 or 5310 as a replacement. Depending on which replacement model was selected, customers will also get a $50 or $25 credit. Kudos to T-Mobile for not turning a blind eye and actually pulling a defective phone but really, T-Mobile, the replacements you offer could include at least one of those hot new handsets hitting your this holiday season.

Mother Russia will be first to launch Nokia 5800 XpressMusic

Mark your calendars comrades, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic will be ripe for the picking starting December 5th. Ringing up at an even 15,000 rubles – which is hardly as expensive as it sounds (about $550) – Nokia’s first touchscreen-rocking S60 handset will indeed be ready and waiting to be snatched up for that special someone on your holiday shopping list. We won’t bother going through the specs again as we all know what this little guy is made of. We can only hope that Nokia doesn’t go and give early adopters a quick case of buyer’s remorse by officially announcing the 5800′s big brother shortly after the December 5th release. Bah, you know you’ll still want 5800 bragging rights anyway. So, Russia, get ready for some 3.2-inch 640 × 360 pixel touchscreen S60 love in just over a month. As for the rest of us, we still have a bit of a wait ahead of us.

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic finally announced

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic finally announced

There you have it – the Tube is no longer just another phone that we’re all waiting for indefinitely. It’s now a phone that we’re waiting for Nokia to outdo. The 5800 XpressMusic is the first in a series of handsets that will feature the latest version of Nokia’s Symbian operating system, S60 5th Edition aka “S60 Touch”. The 5800 is priced just under $400 US, with a slightly more expensive version bundled with Comes with Music due early next year. There are a few minor surprises about the device that came from the announcement event so here’s a spec run through:

  • Three versions: Quad-band GSM with 850/1900 WCDMA, Quad-band GSM with 900/2100 WCDMA and Quad-band GSM with no 3G
  • WiFi and GPS
  • 3.2-inch touchscreen display, 640 x 360 pixels, 16 million colors, tactile feedback
  • 1320 mAh battery (!)
  • 3.2 megapixel camera with Zeiss optics, dual LED flash, 30 fps video capture
  • Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP, USB 2.0 (microUSB port)
  • Stereo speakers
  • Finger and stylus UI control
  • New media bar interface, always accessible via a touch-sensitive button above the display
  • Proximity sensor to save battery life and avoid inadvertent touches
  • 111 x 51.7 x 15.5 mm, 109 g
  • Available in black, red and blue

The 5800 will be available sans-Comes with Music before the end of this year and we really couldn’t be happier to have this behind us. You hear us Nokia? It’s time to get to work on releasing that high-end touchscreen handset we know you’re hiding somewhere. How does 1H 2009 sound?

Nokia Tube info up early

Nokia Tube info up early

Oh well! It looks like T3 is the first one to post a brief review of the Nokia Tube. That’s Nokia’s touch screen S60 handset which they are announcing practically now. You know, the one we’ve all known everything there is to know about for something like least a year now? If you absolutely don’t want to check out the press event, you can head on over to T3rizzle to check out their impressions. Nokia apparently wouldn’t let them post any live shots up so they drew a little doodle instead – too funny. Rumor has it there will indeed be a version with US 3G (AT&T) and the unlocked price will be a very affordable $349. Of course this is not a flagship handset by any stretch of the imagination so $350 sounds about right. Maybe Nokia will decide to take the launch site live sometime soon and we can get this over with already.

October 2nd Looking Promising for Nokia 5800 Tube Announcement

By on September 26, 2008 at 10:51 AM.

October 2nd Looking Promising for Nokia 5800 Tube Announcement

Earlier this week we told you about a Nokia event being held on October 2nd in London. The rumor, in case you somehow missed it, is that Nokia will be using the event to officially unveil the 5800 XpressMusic handset and prep the UK for the impending Comes With Music launch. We’ve also seen what looks to be an official 5800 XpressMusic press photo leaked shortly thereafter. Well Reuters has just jumped on the bus, stating that two of its industry sources have confirmed a Media and Analyst event next Thursday where Nokia will unveil the long-awaited “Tube”. We also have a source of our own who tells us that the October 2nd event will indeed be focused on unveiling the 5800 and Comes With Music, with Liz Schimmel (Head of Global Music), Tero Ojanpera (Head of Communities) and Kai Ostamo (Head of Devices) all in attendance from Nokia. Honestly, at this point we just want to put the Tube behind us. We’ve been waiting for it for well over a year, during which we’ve seen leaks, specs, UI shots, handset shots, etc. Several delays have been all but confirmed and every time Nokia fans think they’re getting close… Nothing. We know, for example, that Nokia already spent a healthy amount of dough to place the handset in a few Dark Knight scenes which was theoretically intended to coincide with an official announcement. Nope, nada. We also know that we’re currently well outside the time line we were given by Nokia back at the Symbian Smartphone Show back in 2007. Still, we wait; and all this for an entry level touchscreen with an all-too-familiar OS.

Nokia Tube press photo leaked

By on September 24, 2008 at 12:24 PM.

Nokia Tube press photo leaked

Earlier today we reported that Nokia may be set to release the Tube to the world on October 2nd in London. While announcing and releasing a handset in the same breath is hardly Nokia’s style, its first S60 Touch offering has been delayed enough that our Finnish friends may have gotten fed up. A leak of the first official-looking press photo of the Tube further supports an announcement sooner rather than later. We know the specs, have seen some spy photos, secured a tentative launch date, and now we have a press photo. Not much more left to do other than kick back and wait for this bad boy to get officially outed.

Nokia to Release 5800 Tube on October 8?

By on September 8, 2008 at 10:10 AM.

Nokia to Release 5800 Tube on October 8?

Nokia fans, don’t start doing your victory dances just yet. Would an October 8th release of Nokia’s highly anticipated 5800 XpressMusic “Tube” make sense? Hardly. The Finnish Internet Company hasn’t yet officially announced the handset and the rumored date is only one month away. Does that mean it definitely won’t happen? No. JAMP cites a “trusted source” in yesterday’s claim that the Tube will become available to the public early next month, at least in the UK. Hmm. Here’s what we know: The 5800 XpressMusic has been delayed, a lot. As such it is definitely possible that Nokia will rush its release by making an announcement and launching the handset within a month. While this isn’t typically its style (look at the N96), Nokia has seemingly made it a point to draw announcements and release dates closer together as we saw with the E71 and E66. The part that puts some doubt in our minds of course, is the fact that it just announced the N85 and N79 which theoretically will become available sometime later this month or early next month. While those two handsets are Nseries devices and the Tube is an XpressMusic device, we would think Nokia would separate it from the pack a bit and put some extra time and effort into the release as it had initially planned to do (Dark Knight, anyone). Then again, you never know. So we’ll see if this rumor gains some more ground over the coming days and weeks but our money is almost definitely on the over.

Nokia 5800 “Tube” Poses for Some Dirty Pics

Nokia 5800 “Tube” Poses for Some Dirty Pics

Ok seriously. If you’re going release some leaked handset shots on the internet and you know they’re going to spread like wildfire, the least you can do is hose that sucker off. Come on guys, it looks like Darryl Jenks got his hands on the Tube and Soul Glo-ed it all up. Whatever the case may be, these pics came from half way around the world so the least we can do is check them out, right? Here it is; Nokia’s upcoming mid-range 5800 XpressMusic aka Tube in all of its greasy glory. There are also some interesting additions to the specs, which currently line up as follows:

  • Measurements: 111 × 52 × 14.5 mm, and weighs only 104 grams.
  • 16 million color TFT LCD, 640 × 360 pixel resolution, 16:9 display mode
  • Haptic feedback
  • 3.2 megapixel camera, Carl Zeiss optics with autofocus
  • Dual LED flash
  • Built-in GPS
  • 140 MB RAM
  • GSM / GPRS / EDGE / WCDMA / HSDPA / WLAN / Bluetooth
  • 3.5 mm audio jack, TV-out
  • BL-5J 1150 mAh battery

All things considered, it could shape up to be a pretty hot little handset. We’re really hoping that those are some pre-release graphics though, especially on the keypad shots. It would be a shame to waste that fantastic 640 × 360 resolution on Windows 3.1-looking buttons. Hit the jump to see what we’re talking about.
