Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo launch delayed; Xperia PLAY and arc volumes affected by Japan quake

Sony Ericsson released a statement on Friday delaying the broader launch of the Xperia Neo until the third quarter due to supply chain disruptions caused by the earthquake in Japan. The firm said that volumes of its Xperia arc and Xperia PLAY were also affected, but it doesn’t appear that there are any delays with those launches. Sony Ericsson’s official statement is as follows:

As Sony Ericsson continues to assess the impact of the situation in Japan on its business, we have communicated to our operator customers and distributors that some volume of Xperia arc, Xperia PLAY and Xperia neo phones has been affected. Xperia neo has already been introduced to the marketplace in limited quantities. However, due to supply chain disruptions resulting from the situation in Japan, we have shifted the timing of Xperianeo’s broader launch and it is now planned for early Q3.

We will address this topic at the time of our Q1 financial results announcement call that is scheduled for April 19, 2011.

Sony Ericsson’s Italian Facebook page has a similar explanation, and confirms that the Neo will launch in July. More →

Gaming and a girl gone wild: Sony Ericsson looks to the past to define the future

According to data released by The Nielson Company in March, Sony Ericsson’s share of the U.S. smartphone market is barely a blip on the radar. Apple and RIM combine to own more than half the market, HTC is coming up behind them with 19%, Motorola holds 11%, Samsung has a 7% share and Sony Ericsson sits somewhere in the “Other” category, grouped among an undefined number of nameless manufacturers that combine to share roughly 3% of the smartphone market in the U.S. But Sony Ericsson smartphones are preparing to invade American soil, and the company’s assault just started with a boob-stab.

Verizon’s spring portfolio leaked: DROID Charge, Incredible 2, Galaxy S 2 in tow

Verizon’s spring portfolio leaked: DROID Charge, Incredible 2, Galaxy S 2 in tow

If you were planning to buy a smartphone from Verizon Wireless soon, you may want to hold off for one more month. It looks like there are a number of high-end smartphones that are set to launch this spring; at least, according to a tipster who leaked an internal document to Phandroid. The leak suggests that Verizon Wireless will release the Casio Commando, an Android powered smartphone, and the Samsung DROID Charge — capable of running on Verizon’s 4G LTE network — on April 7th. The next week, Verizon Wireless will purportedly launch the Sony Xperia PLAY and the Windows 7-powered HTC Trophy. On April 28th, the HTC DROID Incredible 2 may also make its debut. Verizon Wireless’ other 4G phones, including the LG Revolution, Motorola BIONIC, Motorola DROID X2, and Samsung Galaxy 2 (presumably the Galaxy S 2), and are reportedly scheduled to launch in May. Again, this is all speculation, and given that the source’s Excel file looks a bit shoddy, we wouldn’t place too much stock in this… but the timing does make sense. More →

Verizon-branded Xperia Play rears its head at CTIA

Verizon-branded Xperia Play rears its head at CTIA

At a Verizon Wireless media event this evening, we happened to spot a Sony Ericsson Xperia Play handset showing off its freshly inked Verizon tattoo. The device — which was tipped for a Verizon launch by third-party retailer Wirefly back in February — is not new, but the Verizon branding and Gingerbread operating system definitely are worth mentioning. We tried to pin Verizon down on a launch timeframe, but all we could get was a “coming soon” from the company’s PR folk. We snapped a dozen or so images for your review, enjoy.

We just swung by the Sony Ericsson booth to get a glimpse at two of the company’s most exciting new handsets, the Xperia Play and the Xperia arc. Although we can’t say we’re too surprised that SE was showing off these two devices at Mobile World Congress — both handsets have been leaking like a soup strainer over the past few months — it is nice to get some hands-on time with both devices. Sony Ericsson Xperia Play finally announced

Sony Ericsson’s Xperia Play handset hasn’t exactly been a secret, but the journey ends (and begins) today, as it’s finally official. It’s the first Android device to feature Sony’s Playstation Suite gaming app and enviroment, and is scheduled to appear by the end of the year. The Xperia Play runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread and is powered by a 1GHz Snapdragon CPU with 4-inch 480×854 resolution display. There are, of course, the PSP-like game buttons on the slider part of the phone, a front facing camera, 5 megapixel rear camera, 512MB RAM, and a microSD card slot.

Sony Ericsson to unveil Xperia Play on February 13th

The worst kept secret in the cell phone industry is no longer a secret: Sony Ericsson officially outed the Xperia Play smartphone in a creepy commercial that premiered during Super Bowl XLV. Officially premiered, that is, since the spot was first revealed online last week as yet another slip in a string of leaks that began months ago. The Xperia Play will be the first Android smartphone to feature Sony’s PlayStation Suite, a gaming platform for cell phones that will eventually bring an extensive developer-friendly gaming environment to several smartphone operating systems. For now, it’ll let people play PSone games on the Xperia Play. Sony Ericsson has announced on its Product Blog that the Xperia Play will be unveiled at a Mobile World Congress press event on February 13th, and we’ll be there live to cover all the action. Hit the break for Sony Ericsson’s Super Bowl commercial featuring some good ol’ back-alley surgery, and get ready for the Xperia Play to finally get official on Sunday. More →

Sony unveils PlayStation Suite, next-gen PSP

Sony unveils PlayStation Suite, next-gen PSP

Neither major announcement comes as much of a surprise, but Sony on Thursday unveiled its portable gaming strategy moving forward. Two key pieces of Sony’s mobile gaming future were finally made official: the company’s next-generation PSP, known for now as “NGP” or Next Generation Portable, and its cross-platform mobile gaming framework dubbed PlayStation Suite. The former features a 5-inch, 960 x 544-pixel OLED touchscreen display, two analog controllers, two touchpad control surfaces, two cameras, an electronic compass, GPS, Wi-Fi, integrated 3G connectivity and a quad-core processor. The handheld will launch this holiday season and it also features compatibility with the latter, Sony’s PlayStation Suite, which means a consistent experience across Sony’s upcoming new portable and compatible smartphones will be possible.

PlayStation Suite will consist of a mobile gaming platform and a store. Initially, the Suite will include an emulator that will allow first-generation PlayStation games to be played on Android devices, but an Android game store and  new development platform are in the works. The offering will require Android 2.3 Gingerbread or later, and it will feature on-screen controls for devices that aren’t fortunate enough to include dedicated gaming controls like the upcoming Sony Ericsson Xperia Play, which was not announced at Thursday’s event. Hit the break for Sony’s full press releases pertaining to PlayStation Suite and the NGP.
