Windows Phone Tango Details

Microsoft recently updated its website to provide more information about the company’s upcoming “Tango” Windows Phone operating system. The small update will bump the build number up to 7.10.8773.98 and will update the messaging app, allowing users to attach multiple files to a single message. Tango will also allow users to import contacts from the SIM card and include “other improvements.” The new version of the Windows Phone operating system is already shipping on the European version of the Nokia Lumia 900, however it is unclear when it will be made available to other Windows Phone handsets and carrier-branded devices. Handset makers pessimistic about Windows Phone Tango’s chances in China

Microsoft plans to roll out its Windows Phone “Tango” update for its mobile platform in China some time this year. While the new version of Microsoft’s OS will allow Windows Phones to hit lower price points, Chinese manufacturers are pessimistic about the plan and believe the operating system may not achieve enough success, according to DigiTimes. Android-based smartphones are believed to continue to dominate the Chinese market due to the aggressive marketing of low-end devices from local vendors such as ZTE, Huawei, Coolpad and Xiaomi Technology, and the ease of developing applications through the open-source operating system. Despite unfavorable market conditions, Nokia will lead the charge into China with devices set to launch in the first half of 2012. The publication’s sources also believe Huawei will release several Windows Phones din the second quarter, with Microsoft also looking to partner with Lenovo and ZTE to launch devices in the Chinese market. Leaked Windows Phone ‘Tango’ images reveal new details

Images of Microsoft’s next mobile operating system, Windows Phone “Tango,” were published on Wednesday, showing off a number of new features. Tango will reportedly feature the ability to export contacts to a SIM card, handle multiple attachments in a single MMS message and manage roaming both domestically and internationally, according to WP7forum. It is also rumored that Microsoft is building a native voice recording application for MMS messaging. The images suggest that the company will be dropping the minimum hardware requirements of Windows Phone handsets down to 256MB of RAM and the camera requirements down to just 3 megapixels. The OS will warn users with a message in the Marketplace if they attempt to download an application that requires additional memory. Earlier reports have indicated that Tango may only be released for lower-end devices, but official details are expected to be revealed at Mobile World Congress later this month. Purported screenshots from Windows Phone Tango follow after the break. More →
