Despite the fact that Apple’s white iPhone 4 is creeping ever closer to becoming a reality, some people have long since given up on the gadget. We don’t blame them either, what with a new iPhone set to be unveiled this summer. Those of you with white smartphone lust still have other options to consider, of course, and one of them will apparently soon be the Nexus S. According to enthusiast blog BestBoyZ, the mostly white version of the Nexus S pictured above will soon become available in the blog’s home market of Germany. While the site’s tipster had nothing to say about regions outside Germany, it’s a pretty safe bet that Google doesn’t intend to restrict its white Nexus S to just one country. So, if you’ve been pondering a Nexus S purchase but can’t seem to pull the trigger due to its dark complexion, your prayers will soon be answered — or at least half answered. We can’t say we’re fans of the two-tone black front/white back combo, but you know what they say about opinions… More →
It looks like Best Buy isn’t the only retailer with white iPhones popping up in its system. AT&T is now showing two versions of Apple’s unicorn-colored iPhone. The entries appear in AT&T’s Online Account Management system (OLAM), and read as “iPhone 4 – 16GB White” and “iPhone 4 – 32GB White.” While the carrier’s online account tool obviously wouldn’t include any indication as far as when we might expect white iPhone 4 models to hit the store shelves, it’s looking like late February or early March at this point. You know — just enough time to lock subscribers into new two-year contracts and then have them freak out a few months later when the next-generation iPhone is announced.
Following news that two white iPhone models have appeared in Vodafone Germany’s inventory system, Mac Rumors reports that Best Buy is showing the highly anticipated Apple smartphone in its system as well. An alleged screen shot of Best Buy’s inventory system shows the white iPhone 4 in two sizes, both due to launch some time after Sunday, February 27th. While the authenticity of the screen shot has not been verified, the SKU numbers shown in the image match SKUs initially used by Best Buy when it took, and subsequently cancelled, pre-orders for the white iPhone 4. If the February 27th date pans out, the white iPhone 4 will end up launching less than four months before Apple announces its successor, the fifth-generation iPhone.
UPDATE: A BGR reader points out that the screen shot above is actually from Best Buy’s Employee Toolkit and not its inventory system. As such, we can’t speculate on a release date at this time, as in-stock dates and release dates typically do not correspond. More →
The world is still holding onto hope that a white iPhone 4 will some day become a reality and if a purported screen capture of Vodafone Germany’s inventory system is to be believed, that day may soon be upon us. Verizon Wireless announced the iPhone 4 just last week and it included an image of a white iPhone on its website in the process. While the inclusion of the white iPhone was an accident and the image was subsequently taken down, the very fact that Verizon’s Web team was working with images of the white iPhone was viewed by many as a promising sign. Today, a series of images reportedly shows entries for a white iPhone in Vodafone Germany’s inventory system. The source of the pictures claims that the albino iPhone should become available soon, so perhaps white iPhone fans will actually have a few months to enjoy the phone before its successor launches this summer. It looks like the gadget-unicorn that is Apple’s white iPhone 4 may soon be available for purchase from Verizon Wireless. A BGR reader just contacted us via email to point out that Verizon does in fact currently show the iPhone in white on its site. It’s just a single image and it’s buried in a gallery on an iFrame, but it definitely confirms that Verizon is at least planning to offer the white iPhone at some point. Verizon Wireless did not comment on the white iPhone at today’s event, and there is no word on whether the white model will become available from AT&T any time soon. Hit the read link to view the image in question (click the tech specs link along the top, then click the second image in the gallery along the bottom) on Verizon’s site.
UPDATE: The image of the white iPhone has been removed by Verizon. More →
Well, well, well. We finally got our white iPhone 4 fully working, and wanted to update our previous story, but we also figured some high resolution shots of the phone would be pretty tantalizing as well. After being sent a white front and back assembly from our ninjas at cnn.cn, we transplanted the stock black iPhone 4 with the newly received parts. We had some difficulty with the first front white LCD assembly we got, however, so we had to wait for a second one. The second fared better, though it still didn’t work properly — the proximity sensor wouldn’t work at all! We finally gave up until someone suggested we remove a bit of metallic foil covering the proximity sensor holes on the front of the device, and lo and behold, this fixed our issues. We’re now running a 95% stock white iPhone 4. Things we didn’t bother changing include the dock connector on the bottom of the device and the internal headset jack piece (both come in a light gray from Apple).
Adding on to last night’s Apple announcement that the company would further delay the release of the white iPhone 4, we have received new information that paints a different story. According to a previous source of ours, we have been told that Apple in fact has no plans to release the white model iPhone 4. Our source hypothesizes another “delay” communicated around March leading us into an iPhone 5 release time-frame in June / July. Something interesting is that manufacturing sources our contact has are keeping quiet on the matter, not confirming that this was in fact a manufacturing issue at this point, but that there might be something else going on behind the scenes.
Oh well. We’ll always have CNN.cn.
