Amazon eyes Apple’s new maps, acquires 3D mapping startup UpNext

Amazon Acquires UpNext

Amazon on Monday reportedly closed a deal to acquire 3D mapping startup UpNext, according to GigaOM. The acquisition will thrust the retail giant into new territory, and may add increased pressure to Google and Apple, both of which have their own in-house mapping services. While the current-generation Kindle Fire doesn’t include a GPS radio, the UpNext acquisition could mean Amazon will include the feature to offer native mapping capabilities on its upcoming 7- and 10-inch tablets. UpNext, which was founded in 2007 by four high school friends, has reportedly been pursued by other major tech companies as well. Its maps are available for the iPhone, iPad and on Android devices, and are available in 50 cities, 23 of which include “enhanced details.” The terms of the deal were not reported. More →
