Samsung Galaxy S II sells over 20 million units in 10 months

Samsung announced in late September that the company sold 10 million Galaxy S II smartphones, and five months later the popular handset has crossed the 20-million shipment mark. The smartphone’s predecessor, the Galaxy S, took 17 months to reach the same milestone according to Samsung. When the Galaxy S II launched in April, it quickly became the company’s fastest selling smartphone. Sales are sure to slow in the coming months, however, with Samsung rumored to launch the highly anticipated Galaxy S III in April. More →

52.85 million Smart TVs to ship in 2012

Smart TVs will see significant growth next year according to Topology Research Institute, which expects current shipments to double to 52.85 million units. The research company said just over 7 million Smart TVs were shipped in 2010, and that figure is likely to increase to 25.18 million units in 2011. Smart TVs are defined as television sets that are capable of accessing the Internet, can be used to download and install applications, surf the web and more. Topology Research Institute believes there will be three sectors to the Smart TV market: one dominated by Samsung, which offers 1,000 apps, a second dominated by Google Android-powered televisions with partners such as Sony, Hisen, TCI and Konka, and a third sector of HTML5, CE-HTML and HbbTV-powered Smart TVs from LG, Sharp and Philips.  More →

Apple’s mobile dominance to continue: 107 million iPhones expected to ship in 2012

Apple’s mobile dominance to continue: 107 million iPhones expected to ship in 2012

Janney Capital Markets analyst Bill Choi believes Apple’s success with the iPhone will continue to sky rocket. Choi estimated recently that Apple will ship 87 million iPhone units this year and 107 million during 2012, a 27 percent increase year-over-year. Apple’s growing number of carrier partners will be the primary catalyst for the growth, Choi said, noting that 228 wireless carriers offered the iPhone in a total of 105 countries during the third quarter of this year. “There are still a handful of major carriers worldwide that have yet to carry the iPhone. Potential deals with Sprint (52.1M subscribers), T-Mobile (33.6M subscribers), China Mobile (628M subscribers) and other large international carriers pose a catalyst to fuel iPhone sales,” Choi wrote in a research note. Despite a recent rumor that suggests Apple will sell a new iPhone with support for T-Mobile’s “4G” network, statements from T-Mobile USA chief marketing officer Cole Brodman have suggested that T-Mobile USA will not carry the iPhone this year. Apple will unveil its new iPhone lineup on Tuesday and is currently expected to launch an improved model as well as a watered down and more affordable version of the current iPhone 4. More →

LG cuts full-year smartphone sales forecast by 20%

LG cuts full-year smartphone sales forecast by 20%

On Thursday LG’s Park Jong Seok, head of the mobile phone business, announced that his company is cutting its full-year smartphone sales forecast by 20% and now expects to sell 24 million smartphones in 2011, down from its earlier forecast of 30 million units. According to Bloomberg, Park noted that the mobile phone business is “slowly” improving but couldn’t provide a firm time on when investors would see improvement on the company’s balance sheet. “It’s hard to give an exact timing, because there are so many market variables, and the situation changes quickly,” he said. Park expects LG to sell 1.7 million units of its new Optimus 3D smartphone by the end of the year and said “we want to differentiate ourselves with good hardware such as the 3D model by taking advantage of what we are strong at, like displays.” On June 4th, LG’s CEO, Koo Bon Joon, said that his company would have a difficult time turning around its troubled handset business during the second quarter. The company’s phone shipments were down 10% year-over-year during the first quarter of 2011, while phone sales were down 14.3% quarter-over-quarter and 9.2% year-over-year. More →

Samsung: 1 million Galaxy S II units sold

Samsung announced on Monday that it has sold more than 1 million of its new Galaxy S II handsets, and that the phone has been “selling like [hotcakes].”  The Korean company said the time it took for sales to pass the 1 million milestone was the fastest of any device it has sold, and that the Galaxy S II beat the Galaxy S to that sales figure by 40 days. The Galaxy S II made its debut on April 29th, and we’re not surprised that Samsung has managed to sell one every three seconds — when we reviewed the Galaxy S II earlier this month we called it the “greatest Android smartphone available on the planet.” More →

The Street: 1 million Verizon iPhones sold on launch weekend

The Street: 1 million Verizon iPhones sold on launch weekend

According to Scott Moritz over at The Street, sales of the Verizon iPhone toppled the one million units sold mark during opening weekend. In a blog post today, Mr. Moritz details just how he arrived at this number. “Dan Mead, Verizon Wireless chief, told media outlets this weekend that 60% of the company’s iPhone sales were preorders,” quips Moritz. “Recent analyst estimates say Verizon’s iPhone preorders totaled 600,000, and if that was 60% of total sales, then 1 million iPhones were sold on the debut weekend.”

Feels sort of like the movie Inception, doesn’t it? A dream within a dream is very unstable. In this instance, speculation within speculation also seems pretty shaky (perhaps Mr. Moritz needs Yusuf to taylor compounds specific to his needs).

Verizon continues to emphasize the strength of its iPhone sales and that it will not discuss exact figures until its first-quarter earnings call in April. Thoughts? More →
