HP unveils its first Ultrabook, the $900 Folio 13

HP unveiled its first Ultrabook on Wednesday, the Folio 13. The laptop packs a 13.3-inch display, 9 hours of battery life, a 128GB SSD, USB 3.0, an Ethernet jack, an HP TrueVision HD webcam, and Windows 7 in a small 3.3-pound unit that measures just 18mm thick. The notebook, no doubt created to compete with Apple’s MacBook Air, will be targeted at business users and can be outfitted with one of Intel’s latest Core processors, although specific chip speeds were not identified by HP. The Folio 13 will make its debut on December 7th for $899.99. HP also announced several new ENVY notebooks, including the HP ENVY 15, the ENVY 17 and the ENVY 17 3D, and two new Pavilion dm4 models, including a special Beats Edition with a black and red design and a signature Beats logo on the lid. Initial Intel Ultrabook shipment volume below 50,000 units, report suggests

Fearing the notebook market will not bounce back during the fourth quarter, Intel’s Ultrabook partners Acer, ASUS, Lenovo and Toshiba will initially ship fewer than 50,000 units of the new thin and light notebooks DigiTimes reported on Tuesday. Intel, which will invest $300 million in Ultrabooks during the next three to four years, will also hold a conference on September 14th in an effort to attract new partners to the platform. The new notebooks are manufactured by Quanta Computer and Compal Electronics, and are expected to ship in September for launches in October. Sources speaking to DigiTimes also suggested that the notebook market may not bounce back enough for Intel to achieve its goal of owning 40% of the notebook market with its Ultrabook devices. More →

Asus to launch 5-6 Intel-powered Ultrabooks in October

Asus will launch as many as six Ultrabooks in October, Asus chairman Jonney Shih said on Monday. The notebooks will offer screen sizes between 11.6-inches and 13.3-inches. Intel detailed its plans to introduce a new category of notebooks, which it dubbed “Ultrabooks” in May. The chip maker hopes the new category will dominate 40% of the consumer notebook market by the end of 2012 and says the devices will combine the performance of today’s laptops with a tablet-like experience. Earlier reports suggested that mass production of Ultrabooks will begin in September and Intel recently invested $300 million in an effort to speed up the process of creating the devices. The first such device to hit the market is largely expected to be the ASUS UX21. Acer, Asus and Lenovo have all detailed plans to launch sub-$1,000 Ultrabooks during the fourth quarter but Shih said the six from Asus will be priced between $900 and $2,000. More →

Intel: Acer, ASUS and Lenovo to launch sub-$1,000 Ultrabooks in Q4

Acer, ASUS and Lenovo will launch Intel-powered “Ultrabooks” priced below $1,000 during the fourth quarter of this year, Intel’s executive vice president Sean Maloney said during an event in Taipei. Several of Intel’s other partners aren’t as sure they will be able to hit that price target. DigiTimes said the bill of materials to build an 11.6-inch Ultrabook exceeds $700, which doesn’t leave a lot of room for profits. However, Intel did recently announced that it will invest $300 million in its Ultrabook initiative during the next three to four years, which could be used to offer manufacturers a subsidy per unit for marketing efforts. That, in turn, might help Intel’s partners keep their devices priced below $1,000. Intel hopes its new Ultrabooks will grab a 40% share of the notebook market by the end of 2012. More →

Intel to invest $300 million in Ultrabooks

Intel will invest $300 million during the next three to four years in an effort to speed up the development of its new “Ultrabook” category of laptops, Bloomberg reported on Thursday. Intel will provide its hardware and software partners with funding and hopes that the cash will be enough for its partners to develop Ultrabooks that can last a full day on a single charge. “The Intel Capital Ultrabook fund will focus on investing in companies building technologies that will help revolutionize the computing experience and morph today’s mobile computers into the next ‘must have’ device,” Intel Capital Corp. executive vice president Arvind Sodhani told Bloomberg. Intel began discussing the new Ultrabook category during the Computex trade show in March. It hopes the computers will grab 40% of the consumer laptop market by the end of next year and says the devices will combine the performance of today’s laptops with a tablet-like experience in a thin and light product. Recent reports have suggested that Acer, ASUS, Dell, Lenovo and HP will begin mass producing Ultrabooks in September and ASUS’ UX21 is expected to be the first model to hit the market. More →

Mass production of Intel ultrabooks slated for September

Acer, ASUS, Dell, Lenovo and HP will begin to mass produce Intel-powered ultrabooks in September, on schedule for a second-half launch, DigiTimes reported on Tuesday. ASUS’ UX21 ultrabook will be the first such device to market, despite reports to the contrary that HP would release its device before ASUS. Instead, HP’s ultrabook may not launch until the fourth quarter or early next year, a far cry from the original rumored August launch date. Models from Acer and Dell could be late to the market, too, due to slower than expected panel production. Intel introduced its ultrabook roadmap in May and hopes the devices, which will be powered by the company’s latest Core processors and 22nm Ivy Bridge processor, will dominate 40% of the consumer market by the end of 2012. HP will be first to market with new Intel-powered ‘Ultrabook’ notebooks

During the Computex trade show in May, Intel laid out its vision for new “Ultrabook” notebooks that will blend the performance of today’s laptops with a tablet-like experience in a thin and light product. While the company originally said that ASUS’ UX21 notebook would be the first such device when it launches in time for this year’s holiday season, a new report from DigiTimes suggests that HP will beat ASUS to the market. Reportedly, the computer manufacturer will use Foxconn Electronics for the production of at least two Ultrabooks, which will run on Intel’s 1.8GHz Core i7-2677M and the 1.7GHz Core i7-2637M platforms. Rumor has it that Foxconn has already started to ship the Ultrabooks to HP, but it’s unclear when the devices will launch. More →

Intel discusses new ‘Ultrabook’ notebooks, Atom roadmap

During the Computex trade show in Taiwan on Tuesday, Intel’s executive vice president Sean Maloney discussed a new category of laptop computers called “Ultrabooks” that Intel says will dominate 40% of the consumer market by the end of next year. Ultrabooks will blend the performance of today’s laptops with a tablet-like experience in a thin and light product, and the first such product is ASUS’ brand new UX21 laptop, which is due out by the 2011 holiday season. Initially, Ultrabooks will be powered by Intel’s latest Core processors, but they will also be powered by the firm’s new 22nm Ivy Bridge processor by the first half of next year. By 2013, Ultrabooks will be powered by Intel’s next generation “Haswell” processors. Maloney also said that its Atom processor family will “outpace Moore’s law” and that Intel will accelerate the processor from 32nm through 22nm to 14nm in just three years. The move will allow for more powerful and more battery-efficient Atom processors for tablets, netbooks, and smartphones. The firm also said that Android and MeeGo tablets running its Medfield processor will hit the market during the first half of 2012, and that Medfield will enable sub-9mm designs and products that weigh under 1.5 pounds.
