This is it boys and girls — the event we’ve been anxiously awaiting ever since Hewlett-Packard announced its intention to acquire Palm, Inc. for $1.2 billion last April. $1.2 billion is a lot of scratch, and you can be sure that HP didn’t have the Pre 2 in mind when it took control of the struggling cell phone maker last year. But we’re reasonable, as we hope all webOS fans are, and we’re definitely willing to give HP a pass just this once… provided, of course, it has something special to show us at today’s event. Will HP answer the call and unveil some drool-worthy webOS-powered gear, or will its new efforts be lost amid the tsunami of tablets set to come crashing down on the market this year? New HP trademarks could lead to horrible webOS tablet names

Several newly uncovered trademark filings could indicate possible names for HP’s upcoming webOS tablets. The trademark filings, which were revealed today, include “HP Duopad,” “HP Touchcanvas” and “HP Touchslate.” Earlier trademarks suggest that one of HP’s tablets could also be named “HP Touchpad.” HP is holding a press event early next month where it is expected to unveil multiple new tablet devices. An upcoming tablet codenamed Topaz is expected to be among HP’s announcements at the event, and if the company decides to use any of these newly-trademarked monikers, the worst thing about this sleek new webOS tablet could very well be its name. HP Topaz webOS tablet revealed

Another piece of the puzzle that is scheduled to take shape next month at HP’s webOS press event looks like it has just been revealed. A render of Palm’s large-form tablet was first seen earlier this month, but this time around there are specs and plenty of details to go along with new renders and slides. Codenamed Topaz, this webOS-powered slate will reportedly feature a 9.7-inch 1024 x 768-pixel oil and scratch-resistant display, a 1.2GHz processor, an Adreno 220 graphics processor, 512MB of DDR2 RAM, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a front-facing camera for video chat, integrated Beats audio and two 3,150 mAh batteries that should deliver 8 hours of usage. HP will reportedly launch a Wi-Fi-only version of the Topaz initially, but 3G and 4G versions will follow soon after — obviously. More →

HP’s 7-inch, 9-inch webOS tablets get pictured, due in July

Engadget has gone and gotten itself rendered images of HP’s unannounced 7-inch and 9-inch webOS tablets. The site’s source indicates that the smaller and larger tablets bear the code names Opal and Topaz respectively. The images indicate that both devices will have a front-facing camera and a micro-USB charging port; the devices also appear to be buttonless with the bottom bezel functioning as a gesture area. Look for the Opal to launch in September at AT&T, Best Buy, Verizon, Amazon, and host of others.
