HP may resurrect TouchPad, head of PC business says

On August 18th, HP announced that it was killing off its webOS devices business and considering a possible spin-off of its personal systems group (PSG). The head of HP’s PC business, executive vice president Todd Bradley, discussed the TouchPad and his company’s PC business with Reuters, explaining that a spin-off could be the “best value” for HP’s investors instead of an outright sale to competitors such as Acer or Lenovo. “Regardless of what happens, we’re the largest PC company in the world,” Bradley explained. “We need everybody energized, and while this isn’t business as usual, we need people to go out and sell products every day,” he said, noting that HP will still remain a major customer to suppliers such as LG, Microsoft, Intel and Samsung. At least one analyst has remarked that a spin-off could kill HP’s brand value. Even more surprising, however is Bradley’s remarks about HP’s TouchPad, which the company recently discontinued and sold off in a fire sale. According to Reuters, Bradley said HP may resurrect the TouchPad and noted that the tablet computing segment is “relevant, absolutely.” While Bradley appears to be standing by HP, BGR exclusively reported on August 22nd that the executive is looking to leave the company for a CEO role at another firm. Exclusive: HP EVP Todd Bradley looking to jump ship for CEO role elsewhere

BGR has exclusively learned that Hewlett-Packard Executive Vice President Todd Bradley is looking to leave HP. While HP reported last week that the company plans to discontinue its webOS smartphones and tablets and is interested in splitting off the PC business, we have heard that Todd Bradley has been considering a departure from HP for several months. “He’s out interviewing for every CEO job he can,” a source familiar with Bradley’s plans told us. With the drastic change in direction for HP, it’s not surprising to see that the leading internal choice for the CEO role, passed over for an outsider, is looking to leave the company. After all, it was Bradley who spearheaded the Palm acquisition and he has been very focused on turning HP into more of a consumer company, something that is now essentially out of the question. HP exec alludes to webOS tablet unveiling at February 9th event [video]

Early next month, HP will host a press event that will focus on the webOS mobile operating system it now manages thanks to the Palm acquisition. While the event could cover anything from strategy to devices, some product-related goodies are likely a safe bet. After all, HP is due to release a host of devices this year, so it better start announcing them soon. Thanks to some loose lips, it now looks like a webOS tablet announcement is all but confirmed. Todd Bradley, EVP of HP’s Personal Devices Group, basically told CNBC in an interview that HP’s first iPad competitor will be revealed at the event next month. When asked questions regarding how future HP tablets might differentiate themselves from the iPad, Bradley responded, “you and I will talk about that on the 9th.” We read you loud and clear, Todd. webOS tablet coming from HP in Q1 2011?

According to Engadget, “several trusted sources” have informed them that an HP webOS tablet is due out in Q1 of 2011. The report says that HP’s VP of the Personal Systems Group, Todd Bradley, informed employees of the release timeline yesterday during an all-hands meeting. The report goes on to say that the mysterious tablet will be known internally by the code name “Hurricane.” Not a lot to go on here, but if you are a webOS junkie waiting for something bigger than webOS 1.4.5, it’s better than nothing! HP to pass on Windows Phone 7 and Android, focus on webOS for its smartphones

Wondering about the future of HP’s current iPAQ lineup of Windows Mobile handsets in light of the upcoming launch of Windows Phone 7? In an interview with CNBC, HP’s Executive Vice President Todd Bradley confirmed that the hardware giant will not be producing a Windows Phone 7 or an Android handset. As expected, HP will focus entirely on webOS for its smartphones and use its engineering, manufacturing, and distribution power to lift the struggling mobile OS. Bradley also confirmed that HP is still building the once dead, now resurrected Windows-7 tablet in a move that will presumably smooth over any feathers that were ruffled by HP’s decision not to support Windows Phone 7.
