Mobile games have become ridiculously lucrative over the past year

Why was there such a media storm over Flappy Bird? Why is the upcoming IPO of King getting so much coverage? Maybe because mobile game apps are becoming the dominant force in out culture. According to a new survey by App Annie, consumer spending in-game apps has soared to more than double the size of spending on digital music. The survey covers the United States, the big Euro markets, Japan and South Korea. The annual growth of consumer spending on game apps is still a titanic 130%. The annual growth of digital movies and digital music is stuck in the relatively anemic 10-20% bracket. More →

Supercell’s third mobile game is expected to launch on iOS at some point in March and on Android sometime later, although the game is already available for download to Canadian and Australian iOS device users. According to Pocket Gamer, Boom Beach will offer an entirely different gaming experience than Clash of Clans. “We’ve made some risky choices,” Supercell CEO Ilkka Paananen told journalists. “There aren’t any clans in the game and the combat mechanic is different to Clash of Clans. We like to take risks. This is important to us.” More →

World’s hottest mobile developer sets sights on third hit game

Supercell, the developer behind popular mobile games Clash of Clans and Hay Day that hauled in almost $900 million in revenue in 2013, is planning a new game for later this year, Reuters has learned. The new game is titled Boom Beach, and will let gamers fight some sort of battles on beaches, although not many details about it are available yet. Boom Beach is currently in testing and will be launched in March, likely for iOS and Android devices, as Supercell still doesn’t want to expand to Windows Phone yet. More →

Why is a Japanese carrier paying $1.5 billion for half of a Finnish app vendor?

Japanese carrier SoftBank and GungHo just paid $1.5 billion for a 51% stake of Supercell. What the heck is going on? Valuing Supercell at $3 billion is actually a lowball. Supercell has consistently generated more revenue than “Candy Crush Saga” creator King in recent months. Supercell has cracked a very difficult market in Japan, with “Clash of Clans” bouncing around Japanese top-10 iPhone sales charts since last June. Yet King is expected to generate $5 billion from its imminent IPO, even though “Candy Crush Saga” never broke out in Japan. More →

Finnish vendors had 4 of the top 10 highest-grossing iOS apps in November

AppAnnie just published its November statistics about global app sales and the results indicate that the Finnish surge in the app market continues. Supercell’s Clash of Clans and Hay Day were the top two iOS games in revenue generation during the month of November. Rovio grabbed the #7 slot with Angry Birds Star Wars and #10 with Angry Birds Star Wars HD. This is fairly fascinating, because it demonstrates that the $3 iPad version of Angry Birds is generating nearly as much revenue as the $1 iPhone version. More →
