Google Acquires Sparrow

The CEO of the Sparrow, maker of the popular third-party email client by the same name, announced on Friday that Google (GOOG) has acquired the company. “We care a lot about how people communicate, and we did our best to provide you with the most intuitive and pleasurable mailing experience,” Dom Leca wrote on the company’s blog. “Now we’re joining the Gmail team to accomplish a bigger vision — one that we think we can better achieve with Google.” Sparrow promised that while the team will be working on new things at Google, the company will “continue to make Sparrow available and provide support for our users.” Sparrow’s email client is available for the iPhone as well as Mac computers. Sparrow for iPhone gets push notifications through jailbreak tweak

Earlier this month, Sparrow released its gorgeous email client for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. Sparrow’s mobile app features a simple Facebook-like design that is light and responsive, with support for iCloud, Gmail, Yahoo, AOL and other IMAP services. Unfortunately, the app does not support POP accounts or push notifications, which are both big drawbacks for a number of users. A new jailbreak tweak called “SparrowPush” enables push notifications using IMAP idle, however, making Sparrow’s app a viable replacement for the stock mail client. SparrowPush is available now for free in the Cydia app store. More →

Sparrow launches email client for iOS with gorgeous UI, no push notifications [video]

Sparrow’s desktop email client for OS X includes a great UI and a number of great features such as multiple accounts, a unified inbox and a user-friendly layout. The company on Thursday brought those same attributes to Apple’s iPhone, iPod touch and iPad with the release of its much anticipated iOS app. Much like the desktop version, Sparrow’s mobile app features a simple, Facebook-like design that is light, responsive and easy on the eyes. The iOS app supports iCloud, Gmail, Yahoo, AOL, and other IMAP services, however it does not support POP accounts or push notifications. “If Sparrow was to do Push today, we would have to store your credentials (login/password) on our servers to frequently poll your accounts, and send you notifications,” the company said. “This is a responsibility we’re not ready to take. As a startup focused on iOS/OS X development, we do not have the skills to secure your data on our servers and we do not want to put sensitive information at risk. That’s why Sparrow iPhone 1.0 doesn’t do push.” Sparrow’s mobile app requires iOS 5 and can be had for $2.99 in Apple’s App Store. A video of Sparrow’s new iOS app follows below. More →
