Froyo goes live for AT&T’s Samsung Captivate

Sprint subscribers may have just been driven further into a frenzy by Samsung’s botched Froyo update for the Epic 4G, but Galaxy S users subscribed to AT&T will still be next to have a crack at the update they’ve been waiting for. Time will only tell, however, if this update will roll out smoothly or if it will suffer the same fate as its Epic counterpart. Samsung lists the following as key changes in the update:

  • USB Tethering
  • Mobile Hotspot
  • Flash 10.1 Support
  • Enhanced Microsoft Exchange Support (Auto-Discovery, Global Address list look-up, Increased Security Features,  and Exchange Calendars)
  • Speed and Performance Optimizations
  • Ability to Install Apps Directly to SDcard

More information and instructions on how to obtain and install the update can be found via the read link below. More →

Samsung Galaxy S sales surpass 10 million in 2010

Samsung Galaxy S sales surpass 10 million in 2010

We’re just three days into 2011 and Samsung is already reminiscing about the big year it had in 2010. Between sales of its Galaxy S smartphone and Galaxy Tab Android tablet alone, Samsung’s mobile division had quite the year — and the company finished strong. With just two weeks left in 2010, Samsung announced that it had sold 9.3 million Galaxy S smartphones globally. Today, the South Korean giant reportedly confirms that it surpassed its goal of 10 million units sold in 2010. Over 700,000 units in two weeks is quite an accomplishment, especially considering one of those weeks was the last week of the year. With Christmas landing just prior and New Year’s fast approaching, the last week of December is typically not a huge week for consumer electronics.

North America was reportedly Samsung’s biggest market for the Galaxy S, having sold 4 million units across the continent in 2010. Europe came in next with 2.5 million units, followed by Asia with 2 million. Samsung has a lot of work to do if its Galaxy S successors hope to match the astonishing pace set by the sleek Android phone, but with the ability to woo carriers like no other cell phone maker, we have high hopes. Samsung Galaxy S sales top 9.3 million

Samsung Galaxy S sales top 9.3 million

In a statement earlier this week, Samsung announced that global sales of its popular Galaxy S line of Android phones have reached 9.3 million units. Samsung also stated that sales in its home country of South Korea have topped the 2 million mark, making the Galaxy S more popular than Apple’s iPhone, which has sold roughly 1.8 million units to date. Samsung announced in October that Galaxy S sales had surpassed 7 million units worldwide, and it said sales would reach 10 million units before the year was out. Samsung may end up falling just short of its projections, but the Galaxy S is still wildly successful — in fact, it’s the most popular Android line in the world right now. Samsung stated earlier this month that it had sold over 1 million Galaxy Tab units as of the end of November, making its first Android tablet a success as well. More →

Samsung issues new GPS fix for Captivate, Vibrant

AT&T’s Captivate and T-Mobile’s Vibrant are among several Samsung Galaxy S-branded smartphones that have been plagued by GPS issues since they launched. While this isn’t the first time the manufacturer has issued a supposed fix, Samsung today announced the availability of a new app called GPS Restore — which has the sole purpose of restoring a device’s GPS settings to their original state. We’re not sure how this would help resolve any issues, unless Samsung is suggesting that some carrier tweaks are responsible for the problems. In any case, owners of with the Captivate or the Vibrant will undoubtedly be happy to give Samsung’s new GPS Restore app a whirl. Simply search the Android Market for “GPSSamsungRestore” to give it a go. More →

Samsung Galaxy S now #1 in Japan, displacing iPhone 4

Samsung Galaxy S now #1 in Japan, displacing iPhone 4

New estimates released Thursday by Japanese market research firm BCN place the Samsung Galaxy S at the top of Japan’s smartphone charts. The powerhouse it displaces is none other than Apple’s 32GB iPhone 4 — a handset that took Japan by storm when it launched earlier this year. For 18 weeks straight, the iPhone 4 had been Japan’s top seller. In its debut week, however, the Galaxy S managed to take the top spot, though only when considering the 32GB and 16GB iPhone models individually. Whether or not the Android 2.2-powered smartphone can maintain pace remains to be seen, but Samsung should certainly be pleased that it has a hit on its hands in Japan.

Virgin Mobile Canada launching BlackBerry 9780 and Samsung Galaxy S

We just received a tip that Virgin Mobile Canada will not be left out of the smartphone party this November. According to our tipster, Virgin Mobile will be launching the upcoming BlackBerry 9780 on November 9th, and the Samsung Galaxy S on November 15th. Pricing information wasn’t provided to us but we doubt it will vary much from the competition.

Thanks, T!
