Nokia 3720, Nokia's first water/dust resistant handset, due out in September

As much success as Nokia has had — and still has — in emerging markets, it wouldn’t be a stretch to assume the Finnish company’s lineup is already jam-packed full of durable handsets. That assumption, at it were, would be wrong. Say hello to the company’s first water and dust resistant handset, the Nokia 3720. With IP54 certification, the 3720 will also be shock resistant if and when it drops (wink, wink) some time in September. Beyond that, our guess is that we’re looking at a pretty inexpensive handset that will run S40 and never make it to this side of the pond. Tears of indignation or shrugs of indifference?

AT&T to land four new Nokia handsets in 2009

AT&T to land four new Nokia handsets in 2009

Well, what do we have here? Apparently the Symbian OS won’t be left out of the fray this year with AT&T as a previously unknown S60 handset has been revealed in the same deck we reported earlier. The Nokia Mako, pictured in the top left, is a Symbian S60 3.2-powered device unlike anything we’ve seen from Nokia thus far. This side slider will feature a 2.6-inch QVGA screen, four row QWERTY keyboard, quad-band GSM (850/900/1800/1900MHz), dual-band HSDPA (850/1900MHz), 2 megapixel camera, aGPS, Bluetooth 2.0, 128MB of on-board memory, microSD expansion and a 2.5mm headset jack. That is apparently all the love S60 will be getting at AT&T this year but hit the jump for details on three mid and entry-level offerings from Nokia headed our way.

Nokia announces the 6600i slide

A day after launching three new devices for emerging World markets including the cheapest 3G model the company has ever offered, Nokia has announced the 6600i slide. Essentially nothing more than an update to the 6600 slide with a 5 megapixel camera, brushed metal body, smaller pant size and 3G connectivity, the 6600i could be just what the doctor ordered as summer approaches and the thought of ruining your N85 at the beach floats around in your head. Here’s what the 6600i slide has going for it spec wise:

  • Dual-band WCDMA (850/2100MHz) and quad-band GSM/EDGE
  • S40
  • 2.2″ QVGA display
  • 5 megapixel camera with auto-focus, 8x digital zoom and dual-LED flash / VGA video recording at 15fps
  • Bluetooth 2.0, FM tuner, accelerometer, microUSB
  • 20MB internal memory and 1GB microSD card in box
  • 1100 mAh battery
  • 3 / 4 hours talk time (GSM / UMTS), 14.5 days stand-by
  • 93mm x 45mm x 14mm, 110g
  • Available in both black and silver in Q3 for approximately 200€ ($272 USD) before subsidies and taxes.

Not bad at… Oh who are we kidding — there’s only room for one slider today.

Swiveling Nokia handset passes through the FCC, headed to Verizon Wireless

Swiveling Nokia handset passes through the FCC, headed to Verizon Wireless

Remember that funky swiveling Nokia handset that we told you about back in April. Well, it looks like it is more fact than fiction as it just hopped, skipped, and jumped its way through the FCC.  The Nokia model RM-526 sports dual-band CDMA/EV-DO, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, has the boxiest form factor ever and runs software version VN_2040T13_VZW_108. Notice anything familiar? Looks like our ninja was spot on and we may actually see this handset hit Big Red sometime this summer.

New Swiveling Nokia hitting Verizon Wireless?

New Swiveling Nokia hitting Verizon Wireless?

If this wasn’t from one of our normal ninjas we probably wouldn’t publish it, but since it is, here we go… We’ve been told that there’s a “swiveling E71-type handset” that’s going to be launched on Verizon around the July/August time-frame. Yes, a swiveling QWERTY Nokia phone. Before you get too excited, we’ve been informed the OS it will be running will be S40 and not S60. Major buzzkill, huh? The image above is a mockup our guy sent us based on first hand impressions.

Thanks, Daddy G.!

Recap of Nokia’s day at MWC: four new phones, Ovi Store, N97 in June

Recap of Nokia’s day at MWC: four new phones, Ovi Store, N97 in June

A lot is always expected from Nokia seeing as it is still the number one handset manufacturer in the world, but this year has got to be its most stressful to date. A worldwide recession, ever increasing smartphone competition and lower prices combined with higher expectations across the board have surely been keeping the entire town of Espoo up late into the night. Sadly, the company’s day one MWC presentation wasn’t exactly what we’d call a shining example of Nokia at its finest. Beyond the E75, the highlight had to be Nokia’s official announcement of its App Store competitor, the Ovi Store, set to launch in May. Other than that, well, you tell us how the company fared. Hit up the break to see all that’s new in the world of Nokia (aside from the N86 of course).

Nokia announces the 6260 Slide

Nokia announces the 6260 Slide

Today Nokia announced the latest handset that runs on its S40 platform, the 6260 Slide. The 6260 takes its styling queues from the 6220 Classic and boasts an amazing 2.4″ 320 x 480 HVGA screen. It basically is the perfect handset for those who want nearly everything and more from a mobile phone but for some odd reason don’t want a smartphone. Why someone would want this much juice but not want it to run on S60 is a question in and of itself, but we’ll leave that for another time. Specs from the Nokia data sheet are as follows:

  • Series 40
  • 99.4mm x 46.5mm x 15.4mm, 114g
  • Quad-band EDGE with tri-band HSDPA/HSUPA
  • WiFi and aGPS (with Nokia Maps pre-installed)
  • 2.4″ 320×480 HVGA display
  • 200MB internal memory, up to 8GB microSD
  • 5 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss lens
  • Front-facing camera for video calling
  • Bluetooth v2.1 w/ A2DP/AVRCP
  • TV-out and 2.5mm AV connector
  • microUSB
  • 950 mAh battery
  • 4/6 hours talk time, 370/400 hours stand-by (3G/EDGE)

Expect to see this mobile hit Europe in early 2009 with an estimated MSRP of €299 before taxes and carrier subsidies.

Chicks Dig Nokia; Two Upcoming Handsets Aimed at Females

Chicks Dig Nokia; Two Upcoming Handsets Aimed at Females

Details are a tad shaky right now as the original leak source for these two upcoming handsets has removed all info from the site, but it looks like Nokia will be taking aim at the fairer sex once again with two sexy S40 handsets. What’s the source you might ask? Nokia’s Polish site. Oops! It seems Nokia’s Polish webmaster has a bit of an itchy trigger finger and the info on two new handsets was up just long enough to get snagged. The two handsets, Nokia 7510 Supernova and Nokia 7xxx Supernova (the second handset is being reported as 7610 but this is unlikely as Nokia has already has a discontinued handset bearing those numbers) look to be focusing on style with functionality that won’t interest the Nseries crowd, but really isn’t too shabby. Along the same vein as Nokia’s L’Amour series, these handsets will get the job done and bring out the hazel in your eyes at the same time. Specs as follows:

Nokia 7510 Supernova

  • Weight: 124 g
  • Dimensions: 92 x 46 x 17 mm
  • Display: QVGA 16m colors, external monochrome 128×160 display
  • Network: Quad-band GSM / EDGE
  • Memory: 27 MB internal, microSD support
  • Operating System: S40 (with active themes)
  • Camera: 2 megapixel with LED flash and 4x digital zoom; QCIF video recording at 15 FPS
  • Talktime: 3 days standby and 300 hours of talktime
  • Internet: OSS internet browser
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth 2.0
  • FM radio with RDS
  • 2.5 mm jack
  • Xpress on covers

Nokia 7xxx Supernova:

  • Weight: 99 g
  • Dimensions: 98×48×15 mm
  • Display: QVGA 16m color display
  • Network: Quad-band GSM/EDGE
  • Talktime: 5.4 days standby and 300 hours talktime
  • Storage: 64 MB internal, microSD support
  • Operating System: S40
  • Camera: 3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus, LED flash and 8x digital zoom; VGA 30 FPS video recording
