The latest example is the false Rovio revenue news that is now spreading like a wildfire, igniting even highly regarded business sites like MarketWatch and Wall Street Journal. The “news” is that Angry Birds maker Rovio has racked up $3 billion in revenue over three years, $550 million in 2011 and over $2 billion in 2010. Rovio announced today it hit 263 million monthly active users in December 2012. This happened precisely three years after the first Angry Birds game debuted at the end of 2009. Incidentally, the somewhat better-known Twitter hit the 200 million monthly active user mark in December 2012. AppAnnie just published its November statistics about global app sales and the results indicate that the Finnish surge in the app market continues. Supercell’s Clash of Clans and Hay Day were the top two iOS games in revenue generation during the month of November. Rovio grabbed the #7 slot with Angry Birds Star Wars and #10 with Angry Birds Star Wars HD. This is fairly fascinating, because it demonstrates that the $3 iPad version of Angry Birds is generating nearly as much revenue as the $1 iPhone version. More →

The latest game in the bird-slinging franchise was released earlier this month and was an instant hit, topping the iTunes App Store in less than three hours. Rovio’s Angry Birds franchise has become the toast of Finland, replacing the troubled Nokia (NOK) as the company’s most distinguished brand. With this in mind, it’s not surprising that the Fins have a great deal of pride in their world-famous gaming company, so much so that they’ll even drink Angry Birds-branded soda. The Next Web reports that Rovio’s Angry Birds-branded soda “is said to be outselling Coke and Pepsi in Finland” and will soon hit the shelves in both New Zealand and Australia as well. Does the soda actually taste good? Who knows. But we do know that if it doesn’t, the cans will be super-fun to put in slingshots and launch at neighbors’ houses on Halloween.
How big is Rovio Entertainment’s Angry Birds Star Wars? The company announced on Friday that its latest Angry Birds game reached the No. 1 spot in the U.S. iTunes App Store in 2.5 hours, beating out the previous record held by last month’s release of Bad Piggies. Rovio didn’t make any announcements on the new game’s performance on Android, but we wouldn’t be surprised if it made a killing on the Google Play Store as well. Angry Birds Star Wars puts the disgruntled little birds in the Star Wars universe, complete with lightsabers, lasers and Bad Piggies dressed up as Darth Vader and Stormtroopers. Rovio’s not pulling any punches with its Angry Birds franchise. The next iteration featuring the enraged birds is Angry Birds Star Wars and it arrives November 8th. For the first time, Rovio is sharing gameplay footage of Angry Birds Star Wars. As you would expect from a Star Wars crossover, the trailer reveals a lightsaber-equipped Luke bird and a Princess Leia bird firing lasers at an AT-AT filled with Bad Piggies. Judging by the success of the previous Angry Birds Space game and the power of the Star Wars franchise, it’s practically a guaranteed Rovio has a hit on its hands. This could be a new low for malware developers: Using the unbridled goodness of Bad Piggies to spread ad-injecting software. Security firm Barracuda Networks has spotted a rogue version of Rovio’s latest game out in the wild that is offered as a free download but that also “installs a plug-in that displays additional advertisements in some popular websites” such as Yahoo (YHOO) and MSN that are viewed within the Chrome browser. The game is advertising itself as a free version of Bad Piggies under the moniker of “Angry Birds Bad Piggies,” so the lesson here seems to be that it’s worth forking over $1 to buy games from the safety of app stores if you don’t want your computer to get infected. Rovio on Monday announced that the latest installation of its Angry Birds saga, dubbed Angry Birds Star Wars, will be available for download on November 8th. With Bad Piggies breaking records and Angry Birds Space still holding its own, Rovio seems to be set for the time being. What’s next for the Angry Birds franchise? Rovio tweeted out a link to its Angry Birds Tumblr page showing a GIF of a bird in a Jedi robe holding a lightsaber, hinting that the disgruntled little birds will be embarking on a new adventure set in the Star Wars universe. Whether that is a new game is unclear but the official Angry Birds Tumblr says that an announcement will be made at the Times Square Toys R Us in New York City on October 8th at 8 a.m. EST. One thing is for sure, an Star Wars-themed Angry Birds game would push the franchise over the top even more and could make Angry Birds an iconic game series that rivals even Super Mario Bros. More →
Rovio Entertainment announced on Thursday its Angry Birds spin-off Bad Piggies reached the No. 1 spot in the U.S. iTunes App Store in a little over three hours. In comparison, it took a full day the company’s other games Angry Birds and Amazing Alex to reach the top spot when they launched. Rovio CEO Mikael Hed said in a press release that Bad Piggies is “an incredible launch, both for the game and for ‘Bad Piggies‘ as a brand.” BGR favorably reviewed Bad Piggies when it launched on September 27th and concluded that “if you can’t enjoy watching a pig drive a badly constructed car off a cliff and onto a pile of dynamite, you probably don’t have a soul.” Bad Piggies is set to get its first free update with more unlockable content and levels in the next few weeks.
