Official PlayStation app coming ‘very soon’ to iPhone, Android devices

It’s not exactly the PlayStation Phone we’ve been anxiously awaiting, but Sony has announced the imminent release of its first official PlayStation app for the iOS and Android platforms. Before you get ahead of yourself… no, this is not the mobile gaming platform Sony is reportedly cooking up — but at least its a start. Features of the PlayStation app include:

  • Check out your PlayStation Network trophies and keep up to date with your friends’ games and online status.
  • Discover all the latest games, news and hardware for your PlayStation 3, PSP and PlayStation 2.
  • Read all the announcements on the European PlayStation.Blog.
  • Share your favourite products or news with your friends on Facebook, Twitter or via e-mail.

Sony stated that its free PlayStation app will launch “very soon” for the iPhone, iPod touch and Android devices running version 1.6 or later. The app will initially be available in UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy and the Netherlands, with additional markets to follow. More →

New PlayStation Phone videos show PlayStation app

New videos of the still unannounced Sony Ericsson PlayStation Phone emerged Friday, giving us our best look yet at the upcoming gaming phone. Codenamed Zeus, the Gingerbread-powered Android phone now appears in two very clear videos that reaffirm several rumored features. Moreover, we can now clearly see a PlayStation app that appears to be the device’s gateway into a PlayStation-branded gaming experience. While no games are installed on the device depicted in the videos, the PlayStation app shows a series of tabs that organize games into various lists such as “Recently Played” and “Recently Added.” There is also a search feature and what appears to be a shortcut to the PlayStation game store. Rumors suggest Sony Ericsson may announce the device later this month. Hit the break for the videos.

PlayStation Phone caught on video

PlayStation Phone caught on video

A new video posted to YouTube Wednesday reportedly shows a man handling Sony Ericsson’s upcoming PlayStation Phone. While very little, if anything, can be gleaned from the video itself, the important takeaway is the very existence of this footage. The PlayStation Phone is now being demonstrated in various corners of the world, which means an announcement shouldn’t be far off. The blogger who played with the phone did have some interesting tidbits to share as well, such as specs that include a 4-inch touchscreen, Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), a dedicated game store, a touch-sensitive control surface on the slider, an 8-megapixel camera and some special PlayStation-themed live wallpapers. He also says that the codename of the device is listed as Zeus, which jibes with earlier reports. More →

Sony PSP to get Qriocity music with next update

Are you wondering what the music service on Sony’s upcoming PlayStation Phone might look like? PSP owners will soon have access to what may be the best indication yet of things to come. Sony announced earlier this week that a new software update, version 6.35, would prepare the PSP for the Sony’s upcoming “Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity” service — which bears a name so ill-conceived that even Sony apologetically wraps it with quotes. Like Zune, Rhapsody, Napster and countless other services, Music Unlimited will be a cloud-based product that allows subscribers to stream music on demand to compatible devices. The service will launch soon and when it does, Sony’s PSP will be ready and waiting. More →

PlayStation Phone to be unveiled on December 9th?

French gadget enthusiast blog Nowhereelse has reportedly received a copy of an invitation to a mysterious press event early next month. The event, as the invitation states, is supposedly “the most awaited event of the past 10 years.” While the authenticity of the invitation is anything but confirmed, the implication is clear: Sony Ericsson will supposedly unveil its PlayStation Phone on December 9th. While no specific mention of the PS Phone is made on the invite, the standard PlayStation icons accompanied by a matching phone icon speaks loud and clear.

Alleged images of the Sony Ericsson PlayStation Phone were revealed last month and are believed to be authentic. As such, it is reasonable to believe an announcement might not be far behind. With holiday shopping kicking into high gear this week, a December 9th announcement of this magnitude would be a bizarre move at best — then again, this is Sony Ericsson we’re talking about here, so anything is possible. The source of this rumor is definitely hit or miss, but let’s all cross our fingers and hope for the best. More →
