Sony: PS3 shipments surpass 50 million units globally

Sony has kept its PlayStation 3 sales figures close to the vest, but on Friday the company officially announced shipment figures for its popular PlayStation 3 gaming console. Sony said that, as of March 29th, 2011, it has shipped 50 million PlayStation 3 consoles globally. Sony’s PlayStation Network, which allows users to download games, watch movies, and more, now has more than 75 million registered users in 59 countries around the globe. Sony also noted that it has shipped 8 million of its PlayStation Move motion controllers since the September 2010 launch. As of February, Microsoft’s Xbox 360 gaming console remained the most popular gaming console in the United States – that’s no surprise given that it’s available at multiple price points, most of which are below that of the PS3. Sony on pace to sell 15 million PS3 consoles this year

Microsoft’s Kinect sensor may have stolen the show this holiday season, but it looks like Sony might have the last laugh. Kazuo Hirai, head of Sony’s games division, sat down with reporters on Wednesday to talk PlayStation. Hirai confirmed that Sony’s PlayStation 3 console sales are currently in line with the company’s expectations. In the fiscal year ending March 31, 2011, Sony is on track to sell 15 million PS3 game consoles — up over 15% from last year’s 13 million consoles. Sony also announced last month that it had sold 4.1 million PlayStation Move controllers in two months. Independent gaming industry monitor VGChartz indicates that Sony has sold 12.4 million PlayStation 3 consoles so far this calendar year, landing it ahead of Microsoft’s Xbox 360 (11.3 million) and behind the Nintendo Wii (15.7 million) and DS (19.2 million). Sony sells more than 4.1 million PlayStation Move controllers in 2 months

Sony sells more than 4.1 million PlayStation Move controllers in 2 months

Sony announced Tuesday that it sold more than 4.1 million PlayStation Move controllers worldwide in the product’s first 2 months of availability. The news comes just one day after Microsoft announced it had sold over 2.5 million Kinect sensors in less than a month. Sony’s PlayStation Move controller is positioned between Nintendo’s Wii controllers and the Microsoft Kinect sensor bar. Sony’s system uses physical controllers like the Wii, and it allows for very precise game control. Like the Kinect, however, it also uses a camera system to track players’ movements. Many gamers have said that the balance between the two technologies provides a better overall gaming experience, though Sony’s sales pace does fall short of the less precise Kinect. Sony’s figures also include multiple controllers purchased for a single PlayStation 3, while Xbox 360 users only need one Kinect unit per console. Hit the break for Sony’s press release. More →

More than 2.5 million Microsoft Kinect sensors sold to date

More than 2.5 million Microsoft Kinect sensors sold to date

Following the biggest shopping weekend of the year, Microsoft announced Monday that it has sold over 2.5 million Kinect sensors in less than one month of availability. Shortly after launch, Microsoft announced that it had sold over 1 million units in under two weeks. Thanks to the Black Friday shopping weekend, Microsoft has increased its sales pace since then — the highly anticipated motion-based controller is now selling approximately 107,000 units per day, up from 90,900 per day during its first 11 days of availability. While the numbers are quite impressive so far, this does make us wonder if Microsoft’s goal of selling 5 million units by the end of the year is looking a bit lofty right now. With less than a month until Christmas and the biggest shopping weekend of the year behind us, Microsoft is only half way there. If the company can somehow manage to keep up its current sales pace, however, Microsoft will smash its projections along with even the most generous analyst estimates. More →

Microsoft has sold over 1 million Kinect units so far

Is Kinect worthy of all the hype? That question was on everyone’s minds ahead of the hotly anticipated device’s launch earlier this month. As they say, money talks — and Kinect is speaking loud and clear. Microsoft said Monday that it has sold over 1 million Kinect units thus far. Microsoft Kinect, which launched less than two weeks ago on November 4th, is an Xbox 360 accessory that allows players to control games simply by moving their bodies. Microsoft said ahead of launch that it expects to sell 5 million Kinect units by the end of the year and with the holiday shopping rush still to come, the company is certainly on the right track. “It’s a strong start,” Microsoft’s head of gaming Don Mattrick told Reuters. “Consumers are loving it.” More →
