Samsung Galaxy Note headed to T-Mobile according to leaked photos

Samsung’s smartphone-tablet hybrid, the Galaxy Note, is currently available exclusively on AT&T in the United States. According to leaked images published by TmoNews, however, the supersized handset will soon be making its way onto T-Mobile. Subscribers on the nation’s fourth-largest carrier were previously limited to software hacks in order to grant the popular “phablet” access to T-Mobile’s HSPA+ network. The leaked images suggest that the device is running Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich and contains the usual preloaded T-Mobile apps — Name ID, Mall, TV and My T-Mobile. ZTE to launch two ‘phablets’ in 2012

Chinese handset maker ZTE said it could ship 100 million smartphones a year by 2015, Reuters reported on Monday. The company sold 15 million phones in 2011 and is looking to sell upwards of 50 million this year. “As handsets contribute more to overall revenue, it will affect our profit margins,” executive director He Shiyou said. “In 2012, our aim is to increase handset margins.” Following the success of Samsung’s Galaxy Note, ZTE will release two smartphone-tablet hybrids — affectionately referred to as “phablets” — in 2012. “We want to come up with the next generation of a Galaxy Note-type product — a combo product of handsets and tablets,” Lv Qianhao, ZTE’s head of handset strategy, said. ZTE has previously focuses on the low-end market, though recently it has made a push to compete on the same level as Samsung and Apple. Unlike many of its competitors, however, ZTE may face problems and set backs due to its lack of brand awareness. “People who buy Apple and Samsung have greater brand awareness so they might not take chances with a little-known brand, especially one from China,” said Teck-Zhung Wong, a Beijing-based analyst for research firm IDC. “No one really knows ZTE outside China.” More →

Samsung’s ‘brilliant’ Galaxy Note ad named most effective in U.S. [video]

Samsung’s Galaxy Note “phablet” is a hit, with the company having sold more than 5 million units to end users around the world. While Samsung has not yet shared any region-specific sales data, any success the phone has had in the United States can be attributed to the company’s advertising, a new study suggests. The huge handset’s launch in the U.S. was precluded by a series of ads most agree were not terribly effective — including one where the vendor tried to coin the term “Samsunged” — but the South Korea-based technology giant’s current television ad was recently named the most effective ad of the year so far. Samsung Galaxy Note sales top 2 million worldwide

Samsung confirmed earlier this week that the company has sold 2 million Galaxy Note handsets since the device launched last October, according to Forbes. The South Korean manufacturer has high hopes for its “phablet,” and plans to sell another 10 million units by the end of 2012. The Galaxy Note was introduced in the United States with a $10 million anti-iPhone ad campaign during the Super Bowl. BGR reviewed the Samsung Galaxy Note last month and while the vivid display absolutely blew us away, we found the device far too large overall to be used comfortably as a cell phone. More →

Samsung’s Galaxy Note: So much more than just a smartphone

It’s no secret that BGR Editor-in-chief is not a fan of the direction Samsung took with its latest smartphone, but he may have been looking at the mammoth handset all wrong. “The Galaxy Note’s tagline asks if the device is a tablet or a smartphone, but like a girl in Spanx, it’s so much more,” The TechBlock’s Abdel Ibrahim and Jon Dick said of Samsung’s giant Galaxy Note phablet. Smartphone popularity continues to explode around the globe and while these converged devices offer tremendous utility compared to feature phones, no other smartphone on the market can match versatility of the Note.
