Samsung Epic 4G to get Froyo update – again – along with Galaxy Tab, Transform

Several Samsung devices offered by Sprint — including the Epic 4G — are set to get software updates this coming Monday, March 21st, according to a tipster. Sound familiar? That’s because Sprint began pushing out the Epic’s update to Froyo last month on February 21st. Unfortunately, things didn’t go very well and Sprint was forced to pull the update a few days later. Needless to say, users were not pleased and they’ve been letting Sprint and Samsung know about it ever since. Exactly one month later, Sprint is finally ready to give it another shot. This time around, Epic owners can expect a new build (Android 2.2.1, build EC05) to be delivered to their smartphones as an OTA update. Users will be notified of the update over the four-day period beginning March 21st, and the update should take 20 minutes or less to download and 8-10 minutes to install. Samsung Galaxy Tab and Samsung Transform owners on Sprint can expect to be notified of OTA updates on the 21st as well; the Transform will finally be getting Froyo and the Tab will get a minor housekeeping update along with Sprint ID support. Hit the break for all the juicy details including change logs.

Motorola XOOM OS upgrade hits this evening, brings Flash 10.2 support

Motorola’s corporate Twitter account just sent out a tweet announcing that the Motorola XOOM will be receiveing an OTA software upgrade later today. The expected enhancements? Improvements for daylight savings time (change your clocks on Saturday, y’all) and support for the upcoming Adobe Flash 10.2 release. The OTA will hit XOOM tablets later on in the evening and your device can be updated over 3G or Wi-Fi.

HTC Desire, Desire HD, Desire Z, and Incredible S getting Gingerbread (Android 2.3) update in Q2

In a statement to blog SlashGear, HTC let it be known that it intends to bring four European handsets up to Gingerbread (Android 2.3) in Q2 of this year. Three Desire models — the Desire, Desire HD, and Desire Z — along with the recently announced Incredible S will be getting Google’s latest and greatest mobile code. It’s nice to see HTC pushing out updates to some new, and more importantly old, handsets. Here is the company’s official statement.

“We are excited to announce that the Desire HD, Desire Z, Desire and Incredible S will receive the Gingerbread update in Q2.”

Not a ton of good news this week for Samsung handset owners awaiting software updates. Just three days after a highly-anticipated, Android 2.2 update began flowing to Epic 4G handsets, the code has pulled from update servers. Citing increased support calls, Sprint is looking to find the root cause of several, pesky problems.

“The issues being reported are related to data connectivity following the upgrade and SD card issues when attempting to access photos, music, etc,” reads a moderator forum post. “If you are experiencing these issues, a hard reset has been reported to resolve the problems.”

Hard reset?! Ouch. No word on who/what is at fault or when the update might be ready to download again. More →

Microsoft discusses Windows Phone update issues; 10% rate of failure

Yesterday, we told you about an issue being experience by Samsung Windows Phone owners that was causing a recently released update to fail — or in the worst cases render a handset unusable. Late last night, Microsoft took to the web to explain exactly what it’s discovered about the missteps of its first Windows Phone update.

“90 percent of people who’ve received an update notification have installed the new software patch successfully,” writes Microsoft’s Michael Stroh. “Of the 10 percent who did experience a problem, nearly half failed for two basic reasons—a bad Internet connection or insufficient computer storage space.”

Mr. Stroh goes on to concede that the update has not gone perfectly, and that a “technical issue” with the update process “impacts a small number” of Samsung devices. But he reinforces that Microsoft is “committed to learning from our first update and improving the process.”

Microsoft stops pushing Windows Phone update to Samsung devices; cites ‘technical issue’

Microsoft made news earlier this week when it began pushing its first software update to Windows Phone 7 handsets. The new code — which does not include the anticipated copy and paste functionality – has run into a small issue, Samsung phones. From the moment the code began hitting handsets, reports began popping up from users claiming that the update rendered their phones useless — most of these handsets were made by Samsung. Responding to an inquire from blog WinRumors, Microsoft noted that they have identified a “technical issue” in the update and have taken action.

“In response to this emerging issue, we have temporarily taken down the latest software update for Samsung phones in order to correct the issue,” wrote a Microsoft spokesperson.

The update that is currently wreaking havoc on Sammy hardware is, ironically, designed to improve Windows Phone’s update mechanism — which is being updated in advance of a major over-the-air code push next month. This is definitely the advantage to owning Google’s anointed developer phone. Via a tweet, the Android maker announced that it has begun pushing out Gingerbread — Android 2.3.3 — to Nexus S and Nexus One handsets via an over-the-air update. The Big G does caution that the rollout may take a “few weeks,” but knowing the Android community, a link for a manual download will surface in the next 24 to 48 hours. A new source contacted BGR on Thursday with details surrounding much awaited Android 2.2 (Froyo) updates for the Samsung Epic 4G and the Sanyo Zio from Sprint. In line with previous rumors, the Samsung Epic 4G will apparently be updated to Froyo starting on February 21st — though our source claims the build number will be EB13, a later build than the EA17 update referenced in earlier rumors. The update will be delivered over the air (OTA), and will be rolled out across the country over the course of four days. Listed changes include improved Bluetooth device support, Bluetooth voice dialing, Flash Player 10.1, GPS enhancements, improved OS performance and ability to install applications to external storage. AT&T’s Samsung Captivate finally gets Android 2.2 Froyo update [updated]

If there are any Samsung Captivate owners out there who haven’t yet thrown their devices out a window due to frustration, today is your lucky day. Samsung has finally made an Android 2.2 Froyo update available for AT&T’s Galaxy S phone despite the fact that three new versions of Android have been unveiled since Google first took the wraps off Froyo last year. As long as AT&T and Samsung took to make this update available, we’re expecting a rock solid build free of any major bugs — anything less would be just plain sad at this point. If you’re a Samsung Captivate owner that is feeling as though both your carrier and manufacturer have forsaken you, cheer up. We have a very small, very dim, ray of hope for you. One of our astute readers pointed out that AT&T’s support page for Sammy’s Captivate, the one that explains how to find your operating system and firmware versions, actually shows the device — complete with TouchWiz — running Android 2.2. Samsung released the Galaxy S over seven months ago, promising its users a quick upgrade-path to Froyo. Currently, with Android 2.3 in the market and Android 2.4 on the way, the company has yet to provide the update to several of its U.S.-based Galaxy S handsets. Hopefully, this screen shot is an indication that the upgrade is actually on the way. More →

Windows Phone 7 update could be imminent

Microsoft on Thursday published a new knowledge base article to its support site that suggests the first update to the Windows Phone 7 operating system may soon be released. The article details troubleshooting information in the event a software update does not install properly. The highly anticipated first software update for Windows Phone 7 is expected to introduce various new features including the ability to cut, copy and paste text. The update may also fix a bug recently identified by Microsoft that causes large amounts of superfluous data to be transmitted randomly over 3G. Earlier rumors suggested that Microsoft would release the update in January and with just over three days left in the month, this new knowledge base article rekindles hopes that we might see an update before February arrives on Tuesday. Verizon Wireless on Tuesday made RIM’s latest BlackBerry operating system available for the BlackBerry Bold 9650 and BlackBerry Curve 3G smartphones. BlackBerry 6 is now available for both devices and will be pushed to customers as an over-the-air update beginning Tuesday evening at 8:00PM Eastern Time. It looks like T-Mobile’s planned release of Android 2.2 for the Samsung Vibrant has other carriers attention. Via its official Twitter account, Sprint has felt the need to remind you that it is “working to release Froyo for the Epic,”and that this update is coming “ASAP,” but has to meet “rigorous testing criteria.” T-Mobile may be the fourth largest carrier in the U.S., but they were, to their credit, the first to market with this major update.
