RIM's 2011 BlackBerry lineup explained

We broke the news on practically all of RIM’s 2011 BlackBerry smartphones, and even scored some hands-on time with more than a couple of them. We wanted to take a minute to highlight the new products coming out of Waterloo now that all of the phones have leaked in some form. Remember, a lot of these are codenames that obviously won’t make it to retail — this is how the company keeps track of the devices internally and sometimes a single product can have multiple codenames. BlackBerry Messenger 6.0 screenshots leak

With BlackBerry World set to kick off early next month, you can expect BlackBerry-related leaks to keep rolling in hot and heavy for the next few weeks. We’ve already exclusively handled RIM’s upcoming flagship smartphones — the BlackBerry Bold Touch, the BlackBerry Torch 2 and the BlackBerry Touch (Monaco/Monza) — but there are plenty more goodies just waiting to be unearthed. Expected to launch alongside BlackBerry OS 6.1, screenshots of BlackBerry Messenger have been posted to a BlackBerry enthusiast forum. The images show a slightly redesigned look and minor UX enhancements, but the full feature list is still unknown so there may still be a few tidbits yet to be revealed. It might not be the version of BBM we’re all anxious to see RIM launch, but it’s never a bad thing when the company adds new features to its beloved BlackBerry Messenger. BlackBerry Bold Touch 9930 handled on camera [video]

BlackBerry Bold Touch 9930 handled on camera [video]

Following BGR’s exclusive scoop in January and our exclusive hands-on earlier this month, the BlackBerry Bold Touch 9930 (Montana) has been handled on video for the first time. The video doesn’t reveal any additional key details surrounding the highly anticipated smartphone, but BlackBerry fans will undoubtedly enjoy seeing the display being poked and swiped, thus eliminating any possible remaining doubt as to the existence of this once mythical beast. BGR revealed the majority of the Bold Touch’s key specs back in January, and highlights include a 2.8-inch touchscreen display above RIM’s famous BlackBerry keyboard, a 1.2GHz processor, a 5-megapixel camera with HD video capture support, 3G mobile hotspot support and a 10.5mm-thin case. The Bold Touch is expected to be unveiled next month at BlackBerry World and it should launch globally in June or July. Hit the jump for the video.

BlackBerry Torch 2 hands-on!

BlackBerry Torch 2 hands-on!

We’re not done, folks! In addition to getting some hands-on time with the BlackBerry Touch (Monaco / Monza) and the BlackBerry Bold Touch, we’re back at it again with an exclusive hands-on with the BlackBerry Torch 2. This is really what the original Torch should have been; instead of an underpowered, under-spec’d handset, the Torch 2 really offers a great experience from what we have seen so far. Physically, the unit is identical to the original Torch with the same physical dimensions, though the internal changes are pretty massive — at least, relative to the original Torch. The 640 x 480-pixel display looks absolutely great on the BlackBerry Torch 2, and with a 1.2GHz CPU paired with OS 6.1, this thing could light a fire. We are told that the BlackBerry Torch 2 is tracking for a July release on AT&T, with an announcement at Blackberry World in May, of course. Check out the rest of our BlackBerry Torch 2 photos in our hands-on gallery!

BlackBerry Dakota / Montana (Bold Touch) images surface

BlackBerry Dakota / Montana (Bold Touch) images surface

Since RIM first began dabbling with the now ubiquitous touchscreen, BlackBerry users have been clamoring for a smartphone with a candy bar form factor that positions a landscape touchscreen above RIM’s famous BlackBerry keyboard. If Motorola and Samsung can both do it, why can’t RIM? Thanks to an exclusive BGR report, we learned last month that RIM is indeed working on a touch-and-type Bold smartphone. Now, for the first time, images of the smartphone codenamed Dakota (GSM) and Montana (CDMA) have surfaced. The images reveal that the size of the handset is closer to the original Bold 9000 than newer, more compact Bold models, but the added size will hardly be a deterrent to the countless BlackBerry fans who have been waiting years for this device. The rest of this sexy smartphone’s specs can be found in our earlier report. Hit the jump for more images. More →

BlackBerry Monaco (Storm 3) caught on video

BlackBerry Monaco (Storm 3) caught on video

Last month, BGR exclusively reported preliminary details surrounding an upcoming smartphone from Research In Motion codenamed the BlackBerry Monaco. Due for launch from Verizon Wireless in September of this year according to our report, the Monaco could be the third installment in RIM’s Storm series. Now, the Monaco has been caught on film for the first time. As expected, the front of the device appears to be similar in design to the BlackBerry Torch, minus the physical QWERTY keypad, of course. Like the Torch, the Monaco includes RIM’s optical trackpad beneath its touchscreen display, which is something seen as a bit peculiar for the Monaco’s full touchscreen form factor. This is the result of RIM’s continued efforts to turn the aging BlackBerry OS into a touchscreen-friendly platform. Results at this point have received mixed reviews, but the company will eventually shift BlackBerry smartphones to its new QNX platform — which will debut on the BlackBerry PlayBook next — as it was designed with touchscreens in mind. Until then, this is likely the best BlackBerry fans can hope for. Hit the jump for the video and see our original exclusive report for full specs on the upcoming BlackBerry Monaco, which include a 1.2GHz processor and NFC compatibility. Exclusive: BlackBerry Storm 3 shows up, tells all

You thought we were done revealing RIM’s 2011 BlackBerry lineup? Not quite yet. In addition to the new BlackBerry Bold, BlackBerry Curve, and BlackBerry Torch 2, we have received photos and information about the BlackBerry Storm 3. The specifications on the Storm 3 are pretty impressive and will definitely position this Storm sequel nicely among other top-of-market handsets. It also will feature the highest resolution display to ever ship on a BlackBerry smartphone — a 800 x 480-pixel display and yes, it will have an optical trackpad (though we’re not sure why). Here is the thing, it’s entirely possible RIM will change the Storm branding on the device — codenames are Monaco and Monza for the global devices — we’ll have to wait and see. We have all the specs after the break! More →
