Verizon to dish out BlackBerry Tour OS update today

verizon-bb-tour

We understand that BlackBerry Tour owners might feel like the forgotten redheaded stepchildren of the Verizon BlackBerry family now that the Bold 9650 has arrived, but word has it that Verizon will begin pushing out an OS update for the Tour starting at 6pm EDT. Apart from an assortment of fixes relating to the recently introduced Push-to-Talk feature, the move to 5.0.0.732 should also go a long way to fix other niggles including issues with data reception. We’ll be sure to holler back once the update is live, but if you happen to spot it before us, don’t be shy to send us a tip.

UPDATE: Looks like the wireless update is now available.

Thanks, George! More →

Rogers BlackBerry Pearl 3G hands on!

Rogers-BlackBerry-Pearl-3G-6

In 2006, RIM launched the BlackBerry Pearl 8100. It’s critical reception was mixed, but there’s no denying it helped propel the BlackBerry brand to super stardom. Since then, smartphones have become even more mainstream and many serious competitors have emerged. Yes despite all of the competition and its own success, RIM has remained relatively true to its conservative tradition. Even today, a time when more than half of its customers are consumers, RIM is still sticking with a Java-based OS that has remained relatively unchanged since the Pearl first hit the scene. This year, RIM announced to little fanfare. Can a consumer product from a company that is business-centric at its roots survive in the age of Android and iPhone? Hit the jump to find out as we review the BlackBerry Pearl 3G from Rogers. OS 5.0 pushed out for the Verizon BlackBerry Tour

vzw-tour-os-5-update

A truncated change-log is available after the jump, but first we have one simple question for you. How’s it feel? More →

Verizon announces the BlackBerry Storm2, available Wednesday for $179.99

feature

Lovers of all things BlackBerry might want to stop on by their local Verizon dealer this Wednesday as that’s the day “a powerful new Storm rolls onto Verizon Wireless’ network” (sorry, we couldn’t resist.) Going for $179.99 on a 2-year contract after a $100 MIR — no word yet on full retail — the Storm2 is everything that Storm 9530 users could hope for in that it is reliable, dependable and has Wi-Fi. We’ve got a production unit from Verizon that we’re currently testing and will publish a review of it shortly, but for now the best we can give you is a press release couple enormous press shots after the jump.

OS 5.0 now available for Verizon BlackBerry Storm 9530

OS 5.0 now available for Verizon BlackBerry Storm 9530

storm-os-5

Verizon Storm users have reason to celebrate tonight because they’re part of a very special user base — the first BlackBerry users to recieve BlackBerry OS 5.0. We’ve already gone over the benefits of OS 5.0 a whole bunch, so all there is left for us to do is tell you how to get the goods. Either fire up BlackBerry Desktop Manager for PC or Mac and accept the prompt to update your handheld, or visit http://www.verizonwireless.com/storm. We’re just in the process of updating our 9530, but in the meantime, what does everyone that has it loaded up think? Has OS 5.0 made the first-gen Storm the phone it should have been one year ago, or is it just polishing a turd since the BlackBerry 9550 is just around the corner?

BlackBerry 9700 Review: Part 1

BlackBerry 9700 Review: Part 1

blackberry-9700-9

Oh you thought we fell off. Nope — we’ve just been tearing apart BlackBerry’s latest flagship over the past week or so and our review is finally perfectly crafted. The BlackBerry 9700 replaces the Bold as RIM’s newest flagship device. Even though it’s not released yet — look for it anywhere from mid-October to mid-November depending on what part of the globe you reside in — it’s BlackBerry’s most advanced QWERTY device to date and combines all of their next generation features together in a smaller and lighter package. We’ve already detailed our thoughts on RIM and how they are doing on the software side of things and this review will be mostly hardware focused. We will also follow up with a Part 2 review as we did with the BlackBerry Tour since this model is not a production unit.

BlackBerry OS 5.0 to have tabbed browsing

By on July 15, 2009 at 8:10 PM.

BlackBerry OS 5.0 to have tabbed browsing

You know us; we have nothing for love for RIM but it seems that its case of ADD is a lot worse than previously thought. For the better part of a week we’ve been playing around with a new beta build of OS 5.0 and noticed that it has a new feature that has yet to be seen on any other OS 5.0 betas — tabbed browsing. Sound a bit familiar? Well it should, because RIM has been working on getting tabbed browsing right since at least June of 2007. As it stands, the process of opening a new tabs isn’t something we can complain about (all that you have to do is hit the Menu button, click Tabs and then New Tab), but switching between two or more tabs is, quite frankly, a huge pain in the ass as there is no keyboard shortcut. This strikes us as rather hilarious as BlackBerrys are legendary for the speed at users can fly around the devices. We’re praying that the clunkyness of tabbed browsing is just because it’s not ready for prime time and that some added functionality, including shortcuts, will hit before launch. Hit the jump to see tabbed browsing in action.
