Cablevision increases free Optimum Wi-Fi to 15Mbps across NY/NJ/CT

Cablevision’s Optimum Wi-Fi service, free for subscribers, has been extremely popular in the New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut tri-state area, giving customers access to fast Wi-Fi from tens of thousands of locations. Today, Cablevision is announcing that the company has bumped up speeds at all Wi-Fi locations to 15Mbps down and 4Mbps up — the same speeds home subscribers get with entry-level Optimum Online service. Over 500,000 people use Optimum’s free Wi-Fi service, and this move makes Optimum’s Wi-Fi faster than any 3G or 4G network, barring Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE network, which we’ve seen trump those numbers from time to time. Additionally, Cablevision previously partnered with Time Warner and Comcast to allow customers of all three providers to roam onto all three provider’s Wi-Fi networks, so this change affects Time Warner and Comcast subscribers as well which is great. The full press release is after the break, and the new download and upload speeds are already available across the tri-state area. More →

Facebook's Zuckerberg worth $6.9 billion, passes Apple's Jobs on Forbes 400 list

We do wonder what it is like to be 26 years old and have a net worth of $6.9 billion. Seems like a pretty awesome problem to have. Forbes is reporting that Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg is now ranked thirty-fifth on the Forbes 400 list; a list that details the richest Americans. One notable tech persona that Mr. Zuckerberg leapfrogged is Apple CEO Steve Jobs. Mr. Jobs is currently ranked forty-second on the list with an estimated net-worth of $6.1 billion. The young, social-networking tycoon isn’t just hoarding his cash though. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that the Facebook CEO is expected to announce a $100 million donation to the Newark Public School System. Currently the Newark, NJ system is the lowest performing system in the country; only half of its 40,000 students graduate high school. Nice work Mr. Zuckerburg, we’ll hit the proverbial “like” button for your charitable works. More →

AT&T offering refurbished 16GB iPhone 3Gs for $149?

We just got a heads up that AT&T stores in the NY/NJ region are getting stock of Refurbished 16GB iPhone 3Gs and, yes, the price tag is only $149 with a 2-year contract. The information looks legit, but since this is a new tipster, we’re working to cross-confirm this! As far as terms and conditions go… you must be doing a new activation (new line), the refurbs are not available for upgrades. Additionally, they are limited to one per customer. One more screen cap after the break!
