Nokia holding five hour sale tomorrow, online and in Flagship Stores

Nokia holding five hour sale tomorrow, online and in Flagship Stores

Apparently Nokia’s online sale last week was pretty effective because the Finnish manufacturer has decided to give it another go. This time around the sale is good at both Nokia Flagship Stores — in New York and Chicago — and online as well for those who don’t live near a shop. Here’s how this one shapes up:

  • 5800            $280.00
  • E63              $195.00
  • E66              $275.00
  • E71              $285.00
  • E75              $380.00
  • N79              $260.00
  • N85              $330.00
  • N95 8G         $355.00
  • N96              $440.00

Not bad at all, Nokia. As you can see, some of the prices are even better than last week’s deal and all fall into range off the 30-50 percent off. So when can you get your Symbian fix on the cheap? Thursday, June 25th in New York City from 11am-4pm local time (Eastern) and in Chicago from 10am-3pm local time (Central). The sale will also be going down in the same time slot on nokiausa.com. Anyone eyeing some new kit?

Nokia N85 NAM gets stealth, now available in black

Nokia N85 NAM gets stealth, now available in black

OK, so maybe black and red isn’t your thing and you’re looking for a slightly sexier, more functional Nokia handset. Moving right past the overpriced Nokia N96, the N85 is just what the doctor ordered for many. But, to tell the truth, the whole black/”copper” thing isn’t the best look for the handset in many opinions. Fret not, Symbian fans, as word of an all-black version will be great news to any potential N85 owners teetering due to looks. The all-black edition is indeed a NAM version, meaning it’s ready and waiting for some AT&T 3G goodness. What’s more, it’s already available so no waiting needed. The only potential downside — the back still has that hit or miss asymmetrical line detailing you either love or hate. Hit the jump for a few more live shots.

2009 Rogers / Fido roadmap leaked, leads to smartphone heaven

Just because it’s Christmas doesn’t mean that the mobile phone industry is safe from leaks. HoFo user clearskies08 has posted pictures which are purported to be from an internal Rogers and Fido flagship presentation. They reveal all of the flagship smartphones that the two carriers plan to release in 2009. Virtually every single phone in the line-up has been written about before in one way or another so we’ll spare you their specs, but rest assured, if even one quarter of the phones in the presentation end up hitting store shelves, 2009 is looking to be a hell of a year for Rogers and its dog. Hit the jump for a complete list of handsets along with images from the presentation.

Nokia N85 NAM begins shipping, available directly from Nokia for $500

Nokia N85 NAM begins shipping, available directly from Nokia for $500

Just a hair behind schedule according to Amazon’s recent pre-order page, the Nokia N85 NAM has officially started shipping. The N85 is almost universally accepted as Nokia’s true flagship Nseries for the time being, trumping the N96 in just about every area and shaving over $200 from the N96’s price tag. Featuring specs among the best of any multimedia-centric smartphone on the market today, the N85 can be considered a bargain with a price point just north of $550 that is sure to drop fast as more distributors begin receiving inventory. Tri-band WCDMA, an OLED display, dual-sliding form factor, an integrated FM transmitter, dedicated media / gaming keys and all of the bells and whistles that we’ve come to enjoy in Nseries devices are all present and accounted for. Those who choose to purchase the handset directly from Nokia today can also enjoy a solid $50 discount by way of promo code NOK120108R1, bringing the price down to $502. Sweet – any takers?

Nokia N85 NAM shipping out next week

Nokia N85 NAM shipping out next week

Nokia fans here in the US might be upset about being just about entirely left out from the Black Friday chaos, but we do have some good news that might brighten up your day a bit. Despite the fact that the N96 is hailed as Nokia’s current Nseries flagship, most would agree it’s overpriced and under-powered. The N85 on the other hand, is just as capable if you dwell outside of DVB-H coverage and much more affordable. When all is said and done, we would call the N85 plenty more desirable as well, compared to the N96. OLED display, 5 megapixel camera (with a lens cover), integrated FM transmitter, much bigger battery and so on – it would be hard to argue that the N96 is the better device. So, S60 fans, you’ll be happy to learn that the North American version of the N85 will become available next week! Despite the fact that someone at Amazon might have mixed the wrong stuff into his morning cup of coffee before listing the MSRP as $1,200, the N85 is now available for pre-order with a listed in-stock date of December 6th. It’ll set you back $556 to be an early adopter but compared to the $800 price tag on the N96, that’s not bad at all. There you have it – we knew a US version with 850/1900/2100 WCDMA was on its way; seven more days and the wait is over.

Nokia N85 skips thru the FCC with US 3G

Nokia N85 skips thru the FCC with US 3G

It’s only been a few hours since we told you about the N96 hitting Best Buy and we’ve already forgotten about it. Why? The US-ized Nokia N85 is finally showing signs of life! We have seen two versions of the N85 pass through the FCC already, one with no 3G support and one with just a hint of US 3G (WCDMA 900/1900/2100). A few days ago a  third version of the N85, clearly destined for use on AT&T’s 3G networks, was approved by the FCC. The documents clarify that the previously approved RM-333 had WCDMA VIII (900MHz) band, which is replaced with WCDMA V (850MHz) band in new RM-334. This N85 version was tested at 850/1900 GSM and 850/1900 WCDMA and is a full 7 band capable phone with 850/900/1800/1900 GSM and 850/1900/2100 WCDMA. With the N96 hitting Best Buy, maybe we will see the N85 make its debut there, too! It might not be billed as the flagship Nseries but the OLED screen, 5 megapixel camera and more reasonable price point make it a heck of a lot more attractive. Hit the jump for the full FCC description of the phone.

Nokia N85 and N79 Get Official

Nokia N85 and N79 Get Official

Well, it didn’t take Nostradamus to predict which two handsets Nokia would be announcing this week. About two weeks ago it was leaked that Nokia would be holding a private online event detailing two new handsets that would become official this week. The obvious guess was that said handsets would be none other than the N85 and N79 and as it turns out, bloggers were right on the money. Thanks to a broken embargo from Pocket-lint, it’s now confirmed that Nokia made the two handsets official early this morning and indeed it looks like both phones have been pretty well covered. Even the images of the fake N79 handset that floated around last week were spot on (of course – the Chinese rule handset copies). The specs on these puppies have been covered up and down already so we won’t go back through them. Among the few new things we’ve learned of is the, ahem, interesting color choice for the N79 case shown above. Yeah, we have to imagine other colors will be available as well though. As for the N85, it will apparently be pitched as a bit of a gaming device and come with 10 demo N-Gage titles presinstalled. Owners will also be able to select one N-Gage title for free. Both handsets are said to be scheduled for a release next month. Wow! Go Nokia – not having a six month gap between announcement and availability will be a nice change of pace.

Two New Nokia Handsets to be Announced August 25th

Two New Nokia Handsets to be Announced August 25th

Yep, this has Nseries event written all over it. Awkwardly secretive, selective audience, decent budget; when it comes to making bloggers feel special Nokia will always be the king. This coming Monday at 3:00 am EST Nokia will be holding a private online event that will showcase two upcoming Nokia handsets a week ahead of the official public Nokia announcement. The online shindig will will cover all the details about these two new handsets and will likely involve a couple of product managers to field some inquiries. Now we’re not betting men here at BGR but if we had to venture a guess as to which handsets will be announced it would have to be the N79 and the N85. The N79 as you recall is a bit of an ugly duckling, mildly reminiscent of the N82. Specs are pretty much unknown at this point beyond a 2.4 inch QVGA screen, a 5 megapixel camera and Feature Pack 2. The N85 on the other hand, is pretty much an open book at this point after having passed through the FCC recently. Tri-band WCDMA, 5 megapixel camera with autofocus, integrated FM Transmitter and GPS and dual-slide form factor a la N95 cover the highlights. We’d like to think that the 5800 XpressMusic might be announced in place of one of the aforementioned handsets but it’s likely not in the cards. Some day…

Nokia Finally Comes Around, Tri-band 3G N85 Gets FCC Approval

Nokia Finally Comes Around, Tri-band 3G N85 Gets FCC Approval

While everyone sits around waiting for the ever-delayed Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, the first touchscreen S60 device that Nokia will issue, it looks like another first will be coming from Nokia long ahead of the Tube. Say hello to the Nokia N85. But wait, we’ve seen the N85 before so what’s the big deal? As we had heard a while back but not yet confirmed, the N85 will be the first S60 handset from Nokia to feature a tri-band WCDMA radio. In other words, one handset that will be compatible with 3G networks all over the world. Well, as long as you’re not on T-Mobile here in the US that is. It looks like there will actually be two versions of the N85. The big boy packing tri-band WCDMA and an “N85-Lite” that will omit 3G all together, likely a less expensive model for regions without well-developed 3G networks. So here are the specs as we know them so far:

  • Quad-band GSM (850/900/1800/1900) and tri-band WCDMA
  • GPRS/EDGE and/or HSDPA data
  • 240×320 pixel QVGA Display
  • 5 megapixel camera with autofocus
  • Dual-slide form factor
  • WiFi, Bluetooth
  • FM Transmitter
  • AGPS

Still no word as far as a release date is concerned but we have to imagine an official announcement is pretty close and we may see this handset issued before 2008 is done.

Live Images Nokia N85, N79 and 5800 XpressMedia

Live Images Nokia N85, N79 and 5800 XpressMedia

While the world waited with baited breath to tune in for every last word from the Apple keynote, live shots of three little Nokias crept out into the wild. The timing is very interesting. Perhaps even more interesting is the coincidence that two completely different sets of live N85 photos found their way onto the internet on the same day. Hmmmm. Is Nokia planting a few seeds in an effort to steal some of the limelight? We may never know. Regardless, pictured above from left to right you’ll find the N85, 5800 XpressMedia (which we’ve already seen plenty of) and N79. The N85, which is labeled N00 as all Nseries handsets are in the early prototype phase, is a dual slide a la N95 / N96. Think of it as the N96’s little cousin. Little is known about it at this point but from the images found on the read link we can see a 5 megapixel Zeiss camera with a sliding lens cover and dual LED flash. Odd that the lens cover on the picture of the two N85s together has different text than the picture of the solo N85. Next in line is the 5800 XpressMedia aka Tube. We’ve told you plenty about it already and there’s really no additional info to be learned from the photos. Lastly, the N79 (also marked N00) is a big variation from the design cues we’ve seen coming out of Finland lately. It does bear some resemblance to the N82 though, so perhaps it’s an offspring. Whatever the case may be, the keypad looks pretty smooth and the handset is definitely unique. What do you guys think?
