‘Call of Duty: Black Ops’ grosses record-setting $650 million in five days

Activision announced Thursday that Call of Duty: Black Ops has set a new five-day entertainment industry record, grossing over $650 million globally. Following the first-day record Activision announced last week, the company’s latest smash hit breaks the previous $550 million five-day sales record set last year by Call of Duty title, Modern Warfare 2. “Call of Duty has become the first entertainment property in history to set five-day launch records for two consecutive years across all forms of entertainment,” said Activision Blizzard CEO, Robert Kotick, in a statement.  “The title’s success illustrates the mass appeal of interactive entertainment as millions of consumers are choosing to play Call of Duty: Black Ops at unprecedented levels rather than engage in other forms of media.” Also somewhat predictable were the two Xbox LIVE records set by Black Ops on launch day — the title was played by more than 2.6 million unique players who logged over 5.9 million multiplayer hours — and the  PlayStation 3 launch sales records set at both Amazon.com and GameStop. Hit the break for the full press release, or allow us to summarize it in five words: it was a smash hit. More →

Valve apologizes for accidentally dropping ban hammer on 12,000 Modern Warfare 2 users

Oh DRM, how we love thee. Valve, the company responsible for the lifestyle game Modern Warfare 2, recently issued an apology to over 12,000 legitimate MW2 users who were accidentally banned from getting their first-person shooter on by the company’s DRM implementation. Valve’s president, Gabe Newell, wrote an email stating the the snafu occurred when an issue  with “a signature check between the disk version of a DLL and a latent memory version” occurred. We’re just going to go ahead and take Mr. Newell’s word for it. The email also promised affected users two copies of Left 4 Dead 2, one for them and one for a friend. Anyone out there get accidentally hammer banned by Valve over the last few weeks? More →

Modern Warfare 2 sells almost 5M copies on launch day

We all knew that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was destined to smash industry sales records, but the pace at which the game is reported to be selling is absolutely shocking. By Activision’s own internal estimate, the first 24 hours of availability in the US, Canada and UK saw 4.7 million copies sold and generated approximately $310 million of revenue. As for the rest of the world, a good estimate is proving itself rather hard to come by, but Joystiq believes we’re looking at another 2.7m copies on the first day. Yes indeed, it looks as if Activision CEO Bobby Kotick will indeed be getting that mega yacht for Christmas. More →
