Millennial: Android, iOS shares flat in October; Apple still top vendor, HTC now No.2

Android topped Millennial Media’s usage share charts for the eleventh consecutive month in October as the smartphone platform landscape stayed completely flat. The mobile ad network served 56% of impressions to Android devices, 28% to iOS handsets and 13% to BlackBerry phones last month, just as it did between July and September according to its third-quarter Mobile Mix report. Apple inched up slightly as October’s top vendor with 23.50% share compared to 23.09% during the third quarter, and HTC showed the most growth, passing Samsung to take the No.2 spot with 18.11%. Apple’s iPhone was the most popular handset line with a 12.53% usage share but Samsung had a strong showing with six of the top-20 phones on Millennial’s network. One of those phones, the Samsung Freeform, is the first feature phone to break into Millennial’s top-20 devices list since May of this year. Additional charts from Millennial’s October Mobile Mix report follow below. Millennial: Android usage doubled iOS in Q3, iPad king of tablets with 456% growth

Usage of Google’s mobile platform across the Millennial network doubled iOS in the third quarter according to new data just released by Millennial Media. After representing 54% of impressions served by the mobile ad network in August, Android finished strong to account for 56% of impressions in the September quarter. That figure doubled iOS in the No. 2 spot with 28% during the quarter, and it dwarfed RIM’s 13% share. Symbian accounted for just 1% of impressions and Microsoft’s Windows Mobile and Windows Phone platforms combined to also account for 1% of impressions. The iPad dominated tablets, having grown a whopping 456% between the third quarter in 2010 and this past quarter, and impressions across iOS grew 60% over the same period. Apple was the top manufacturer on Millennial’s network in the third quarter with a 23.09% share followed by Samsung (16.48%), HTC (15.5%), RIM (11.05%) and Motorola (10.7%). Apple’s iPhones were also the top handset line with a 12.55% share, more than double the No. 2 device line, LG’s Optimus phones, which accounted for 6.3% of impressions served. RIM’s BlackBerry Curve line was next with 4.7% followed by Motorola DROID phones with 4.35% and the HTC desire with 4.01%. Additional charts from Millennial’s third-quarter Mobile Mix report follow below. Millennial: Android still top OS in August with almost twice Apple’s iOS share

Millennial: Android still top OS in August with almost twice Apple’s iOS share

For the ninth consecutive month, Android topped the charts in Millennial Media’s “Mobile Mix” mobile device usage share report. Based on traffic to its mobile ad network, Millennial found that Android’s share of the mobile OS market slid in at 54% for the month of August, almost double the next closest platform. Apple’s iOS climbed to 28% in the No. 2 spot, followed by RIM’s BlackBerry OS at 13%. Android’s usage share was 61% and iOS held a 21% share in July, but the big swing in August is a bit misleading. Millennial’s August report combines smartphone and tablet traffic for the first time, so historical comparisons are rendered somewhat irrelevant. Apple remained the top manufacturer by usage in August with a 23.19% share, and HTC reclaimed its No. 2 position with 16.33%. Samsung held the No. 3 spot with 14.55%, Motorola followed with 11.37% and RIM slid into the No. 5 position with 11.06%. Additional charts from Millennial’s August report follow below. More →

Millennial: Android share balloons to 61% in July, iOS usage declines

Millennial Media reports a sizable swing in smartphone usage for the first time in several months, with Android usage on the firm’s network increasing from 54% in June to 61% in July. Android’s lead as reported by Millennial’s Mobile Mix report now extends through its eight consecutive month, and Apple’s iOS again finds itself a distant No. 2. While iOS has declined slowly but steadily over the past few months on the Millennial ad network, July saw Apple’s OS drop six points to 21%. IOS lost just one point in each of the previous two months. RIM’s BlackBerry platform dropped one point to 14% in July, Symbian slid one point to 2% and Windows Phone stayed flat at 2%. Apple was once again the top vendor in July according to Millennial with a 26.45% share of the market, and Samsung followed with 19.11%. RIM was No. 3 with 11.45%, HTC was No. 4 with 10.98% and Motorola rounded out the top-5 with 10.26% of the market.
