T-Mobile now carries micro-SIM cards for iPhone 4 users

T-Mobile now offers micro-SIM cards for subscribers with unlocked iPhone 4 smartphones who want to use its network. The SIMs are listed at $9.99 but are currently available for free online. T-Mobile confirmed last month that its network is now home to more than 1 million iPhone handsets, though the bulk of them are older models that accept full-sized SIM cards. The carrier also said at that time, however, that it would soon offer micro-SIM cards for iPhone 4 users. While subscribers with unlocked iPhone 4 handsets will not be able to utilize T-Mobile’s 3G or 4G HSPA+ networks, GSM and 2G EDGE services will work fine. The move could also partially be preparation for Apple’s next-generation iPhone 5, which some believe will launch from T-Mobile and Sprint this fall in addition to AT&T and Verizon Wireless. More →

Apple proposes new industry standard SIM card, smaller than micro-SIM

Apple proposes new industry standard SIM card, smaller than micro-SIM

Apple has reportedly submitted a proposal for a new industry stand for SIM cards that would drastically reduce their size. According to Reuters, Apple’s new SIM design is even smaller than the micro-SIM the company currently uses in its iPhone 4 smartphone and iPad tablets. The new SIM card, which has already been backed by France’s Orange and other carriers, would allow cell phone manufacturers to build devices that are much thinner as a result of the smaller, thinner SIM readers that could be included in phones and tablets. “We were quite happy to see last week that Apple has submitted a new requirement to (European telecoms standards body) ETSI for a smaller SIM form factor — smaller than the one that goes in iPhone 4 and iPad,” Orange’s head of mobile told Reuters. “They have done that through the standardization route, through ETSI, with the sponsorship of some major mobile operators, Orange being one of them.” Neither Apple or ETSI have commented on the the proposed SIM. Why I’m not switching to the Verizon iPhone: The SIM card

I’ll admit it, while I have most aspects of my life under control and normalized, there is one, tiny section that seems to have complete control over me: my obsessive, compulsive need to switch mobile devices. In the grand scheme of things that I could project this obsessive tendency on, I suppose phones are fairly benign. So ladies and gentlemen, the reason I’m not switching to a Verizon iPhone? The thought of not having a SIM card gives me the shakes. More →

BGR Breaks It Down: Getting your iPad 3G to work in Canada

ipad-3g-canada-2

With the iPad’s Canadian launch delayed until the end of May, we thought we’d give those with glowing hearts who made the trek into the home of the brave a hand in getting their new gadget up and running on one of Canada’s four HSPA+ carriers. A lot of people have written in and put in requests for help — and with the dollar basically on par we’re sure that we’re going to get even more before the official Canadian launch — so we thought we’d do our part and help out our early adopting friends in the Great White North. Getting the iPad Wi-Fi + 3G up and running in Canada is as easy 1, 2, 3. As always, the nitty gritty is after the jump.
