On Jumptap's network, Android dominates more U.S. states than iOS or BlackBerry

Jumptap recently released a report that separated the 50 states by mobile operating system. It mapped out which states are prominently iOS users, which use Android the most, and which states use BlackBerry smartphones based on 83 million users on its ad network. New England and the Midwest represented the largest pockets of iOS users while Texas, California and much of the West were Android users. New York is primarily a BlackBerry state, perhaps due to the number of corporate users in New York City. Alaska was neutral and Hawaii had more iOS users than Android or BlackBerry. Apple sued over iPhone location tracking scandal

It was only a matter of time. Apple, Inc. has been named as a defendant in a federal district court suit over the iPhone and iPad 3G location tracking scandal — at this point we think it’s safe to refer to it as such. The Cupertino company’s silence over the past week has only intensified rumors and speculation that Apple is, somehow, using this harvested data in a clandestine or nefarious manner. Bloomberg notes that the lawsuit was filed in Tampa, FL by two consumers and, at this point, it is unknown if the duo will seek class action status. Details on the case are scarce at the moment, but we’re sure this isn’t the last we’ll be hearing about this one. More →

New ‘Find My Friends’ feature coming to iPhone in iOS 4.3

Apple released its first developer build of iOS 4.3 on Wednesday and needless to say, developers have been on a treasure hunt ever since. We compiled a list of new iOS features last night, but an interesting one popped up early this morning. The forthcoming addition, found buried in the iOS code, is called “Find My Friends.” The purpose of the service is unknown for the time being, but the code suggests that it is tied to MobileMe. The name of the forthcoming feature obviously leads us to believe that Apple plans to add location sharing to MobileMe, likely in line with Google Latitude, which allows users to broadcast their locations to friends. Loopt integrates Facebook Places into its iOS app

Location-based social networking site Loopt has just announced a new feature, Facebook Places. As touted in a press release, a newly released iOS application will allow users to “view both Facebook and Loopt check-ins on an interactive map, providing a clear view of friends gathering nearby.” The new code will also allow users to simultaneously check-in to locations on Facebook and Loopt as well as view the history of Facebook and Loopt friends. Verizon launches mobile recovery application for Android, BlackBerry, Palm, and Windows Mobile

Remember that Verizon phone recovery service we told you about five days ago? Well… today, Verizon has made it a reality; albeit four days later than predicted. Via a press release, Big Red announced Mobile Recovery, “a web-and phone-based application that can help customers in the event they lose or misplace their phones.” The Mobile Recovery software — which will work on Android, BlackBerry, Palm, and Windows Mobile handsets — can remote lock and remote wipe your device as well as show your phone’s position, via GPS, on a map. The service can also be used to make your phone sound an alarm (which can be especially useful for those times your phone is lost in the couch cushions). The Mobile Recovery application will be available to customers who subscribe to the Total Equipment Coverage (TEC) program that Verizon offers; the TEC service is underwritten by Asurion. Alleged T-Mobile Q2 – Q4 2009 3G rollout schedule revealed

Rest easy, residents of Wichita Falls, T-Mobile 3G is coming your way this month! Ok don’t get too excited as the info above is hardly confirmed at this point, but an alleged screen shot of an internal T-Mobile memo is making the rounds this morning. The memo allegedly lays out the company’s 3G upgrade path for the remainder of 2009. If it turns out to be real, the document definitely lists some pretty big markets such as Tucson, Eugene, Cleveland and a bunch of cities across Texas, though plenty of major markets will still be left hanging unless they’re covered by those oh-so-sketchy and more/and many more mentions. Sit tight while we ping a few T-Mobile ninjas to see what we can drum up along the lines of a confirmation.
