MMC announces strategic transaction with Europe's largest Internet company

Hot off the wire: MMC, the parent company of BGR has announced a strategic transaction with the United Internet Group — Europe’s largest Internet company. With a name like Mail.com and more than 14 million registered users, you can see why the Germans see tremendous potential to expand the offering internationally. As part of the transaction, MMC will transition the Mail.com email services over to United Internet AG while MMC will be the primary provider of original digital content to the Mail.com portal. Additionally, look for MMC to rebrand itself in the coming weeks. It’s really exciting news, especially for a site like BGR… you’ll just have to stay tuned. RealD takes home MMC's technology 'Breakthrough of the Year' award, presented by Crest 3D

Mail.com held its annual “Breakthrough of the Year” awards show in Los Angeles last night, and — in honor of BGR — they added a technology category to this year’s show. The winner of this year’s Breakthrough award in technology category was RealD. The official line goes something like this: “Using the characteristics of human perception to create a 3D image, the 2010 Breakthrough in Technology award recognizes RealD for the significant impact its breakthrough patented technology has had on our lives. From entertainment to piloting the Mars Rover, heads-up displays for military jets and robotic medical procedures.” For those of you who aren’t familiar with RealD, they are the company behind the cinema technology used to display movies in 3D (e.g. Avatar, Despicable Me, Toy Story 3, etc.). RealD’s self-written elevator speech looks like this:

We license our RealD Cinema Systems to motion picture exhibitors that show 3D motion pictures and alternative 3D content. We also provide our RealD Format, active and passive eyewear, and display and gaming technologies to consumer electronics manufacturers and content producers and distributors to enable the delivery and viewing of 3D content on high definition televisions, laptops and other displays.

Taking BGR to the next level — MMC acquires BGR

I wanted to share some amazing news with you all.

I am happy to report that BGR has been acquired by MMC. Moving forward, CEO of MMC Jay Penske and I are partners on BGR, and I couldn’t be happier. This will allow BGR to grow enormously. From a more comprehensive and diverse editorial staff — all the way to the relaunching of BGR as BGR.com with new features and functionality, the site will advance dramatically and continue our mission: to break the biggest stories in this category possible. I am the President, Editor-in-Chief, and General Manager of BGR, and will continue to run the business as well as the editorial aspects of the site — nothing will change there.

BGR was started by myself, Jonathan Geller, a little more than four years ago. In that time, it has grown from just a small passion project into a profitable, dominant online business that is ranked with some of the biggest sites on the web.  As I write this, BGR is, according to Technorati, ranked #49 out of every single site in the world. When I think back about how this was accomplished, and how with just a few great writers, and practically no infrastructure, we built something pretty mind blowing… I can’t wait to hit #1.
