Also launching ahead of the holidays is the HTC (2498) Windows Phone 8X, which starts at $99.99 with 8GB of storage and tops out at $199.99 with 16GB, and the Nokia Lumia 820, which will cost $49.99 on contract. Nokia Lumia 920 review: Windows Phone’s white knight falls short again

In late March 2012, the tide seemed as though it was about to turn for Microsoft’s (MSFT) Windows Phone platform. After a year and a half of struggling, the “first real Windows Phone” was about to launch in early April and change the smartphone landscape forever. People got excited. I got excited. After waiting so long for a true third player to emerge, this was it. The surprisingly affordable Lumia 900 flagship phone was released by AT&T (T) on April 8th and it was initially free for new subscribers or $99 for AT&T customers. What a deal! The phone was gorgeous, unique, fast and fresh, presenting a genuine alternative in an industry dominated by two behemoths. But no one cared. More →

Nokia’s flagship Lumia 920 to attack rivals on price

Nokia’s flagship Lumia 920 to attack rivals on price

Nokia’s (NOK) upcoming flagship smartphone, the Lumia 920, is set to launch in the coming weeks and Nokia appears to be utilizing a familiar plan of attack. While the new smartphone offers a number of novel features such as wireless charging, Nokia has had trouble attracting attention to its smartphones — and to Windows Phone in general — in key markets like the United States. To help foster interest in the device, The Wall Street Journal reports that Nokia has chosen to cut into its margins and price the flagship phone at $149.99 while rival flagship devices start at $199. Of note, Nokia priced its previous flagship at $99.99, but the cost advantage didn’t seem to appeal to the mass market and Nokia only sold 4 million Lumia phones globally in the Lumia 900’s launch quarter. Nokia will reportedly announce launch details for the Lumia 920 on Thursday.

Nokia Lumia 920 will only be an AT&T exclusive for six months

Nokia Lumia 920

Nokia’s (NOK) flagship Lumia 920 is a fantastic looking smartphone. It’s got a great PureView camera, NFC, wireless charging, Windows Phone 8 — the works. For U.S. customers, it’s only major fault might be that it’ll only be available on AT&T (T). According to WPCentral, however, AT&T has a six-month exclusive to sell the Nokia Lumia 920. After that time’s up, it’s very possible that other carriers will get their own version of the smartphone. Nokia has already shown interest in releasing its new Lumia smartphones on other carriers — for example, the Lumia 820 will also be on AT&T, but T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless (VZ) will get the Lumia 810 and Lumia 822, respectively. Nokia ad bashes iPhone 5 for being ‘boring,’ promotes Lumia 920’s colors [video]

Nokia Video Attacks iPhone 5

Samsung (005930) isn’t the only company attacking Apple’s (AAPL) new iPhone 5 for being “boring and disappointing.” Nokia (NOK) has hopped on the same bandwagon with a new online video that slams Apple fans for waiting hours in line for the iPhone 5 only to have two colors to choose from. The video suggests that the iPhone 5’s lack of color options is a huge black mark on the device, while claiming Nokia’s upcoming Windows Phone 8-based Lumia 920 is the best alternative because it does come in a variety of rainbow colors. The online video is part of Nokia’s “switch” campaign to sway users way from iOS and Android. Nokia’s video follows below.

Earlier this month, Nokia (NOK) unveiled the Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 at a press event in New York City, but the Finnish vendor failed to announce pricing and launch information. Nokia Russia on Tuesday began accepting pre-orders for both devices, while Nokia Germany and Nokia Italy announced that the company’s flagship Windows Phone 8 handset will launch in mid-November for $835 and $771, respectively, before taxes and subsidies. The lower-end Lumia 820 will be offered for an unsubsidized price of $643. By comparison, the Galaxy S III is available in Europe for roughly $680. This will include the Nokia (NOK) Lumia 920 and the Samsung (005930) Galaxy Note II. An AT&T spokesperson had no comment. Nokia unveiled its flagship Lumia 920 smartphone during a press conference last week, and it features a 4.5-inch display, a unique design and Windows Phone 8. Samsung’s Galaxy Note II was announced ahead of the annual IFA trade show in August, and BGR took a hands-on look at the “phablet” earlier this week. Samsung’s mobile boss JK Shin was recently quoted as saying the Note II will launch in October.

Nokia to conduct ‘ethics review’ over phone photo fakery flap

Nokia Lumia 920 Video Controversy

Things just aren’t going well for Nokia (NOK) these days. Bloomberg reports that the Finnish electronics manufacturer will be conducting a full self-evaluation to determine “why the company published misleading marketing materials.” The misleading materials in question were a promotional video and several still shots of pictures that many assumed had been taken with Nokia’s new Lumia 920 smartphone. But when it turned out that the video and pictures were not actually filmed with the new Lumia phone, Nokia had to issue a series of embarrassing apologies for misleading consumers. All in all, it hasn’t been a great start to Nokia’s Windows Phone 8 career. More →

Separately, The Verge reports that AT&T (T) will launch the Lumia 920 on November 2nd in the U.S., although it warns that the date is not “set in stone.” A Nokia spokesperson declined to comment. Live from Nokia’s Windows Phone 8 event

Nokia Windows Phone 8 Live-Blog

Nokia (NOK) has seen limited interest in its early Windows Phones, but not nearly enough to prevent three consecutive quarterly losses that topped $1 billion each. 2012 is a year of transition for Microsoft’s (MSFT) software platforms, however, and Microsoft previewed its next-generation Windows Phone 8 platform back in June. Nokia is Microsoft’s premier Windows Phone partner, and now we finally get to see what the Finnish vendor has in store for its new line of Lumia smartphones. Recent leaks suggest the Lumia 820 and Lumia 920 will be among the handsets Nokia unveils today, but who knows what else might be in store? Our live coverage of Nokia’s Windows Phone 8 press conference, which is scheduled to begin at around 10:00 a.m. Eastern, follows below.

UPDATE: Sorry, guys — the site crashed midway through our coverage of Nokia’s event due to ridiculous traffic volume. We apologize for the inconvenience and recommend you check out our hands-on post with the Lumia 920 and Lumia 820. More →
