Nokia reportedly on the verge of bringing its Lumia 920 to China’s largest carrier

Apple (AAPL) has been trying to years to make its iPhone available in China, but apparently Nokia (NOK) isn’t having the same problems getting its own flagship device on sale in the world’s most populous country. Unnamed sources have told Bloomberg that Nokia is close to a deal with China Mobile to support the Lumia 920, thus paving the way for the device to “go on sale in China before the end of this month.” As Bloomberg notes, this is particularly significant because China Mobile doesn’t support the iPhone despite being the largest carrier in the world with “703 million subscribers at the end of October, including 79.3 million users of high-speed, third-generation services that allow smartphones faster Internet access.”

Lumia 920 sales reportedly soaring

Nokia’s (NOK) Lumia 920 has been in short supply in several regions, and a debate ensued regarding whether the stock-outs were due to solid sales or short supply. According to channel checks performed recently by T. Michael Walkley and his colleagues at Canaccord Genuity, the answer is “both.” Walkley and his team recently performed their typical checks to gauge U.S. smartphone sales for the month of November, but his findings this month were more interesting than most. Nokia’s lead designer channels Jony Ive to explain Lumia 920 design [video]

In many ways, the Nokia’s (NOKLumia 920 is the antithesis of the iPhone 5. Nokia’s design language to build devices that feel more “human” and have a solid and weighted feel is completely different from Apple’s (AAPL), which strives to make devices thinner, lighter and stripped down to the bare essentials. With the Lumia 920, Nokia has finally built a smartphone that stands out from the crowd. Marko Ahtisaari, head of design at Nokia, isn’t a household name the way Jonathan Ive is, but in this video he convincingly breaks down the vision behind the Lumia 920. More →

Nokia Lumia 920 Durability Test

Nokia’s Lumia 920 is strong enough to survive getting run over by a car [video]

Nokia’s (NOKLumia 920 is a thick and heavy smartphone. While most people will look at that as a disadvantage, Nokia calls that durability. Depending on your point of view, the “durability test” performed by the guys at PhoneBuff may or may not make your jaw drop. In a series of four tests, the “tester” drives over a Lumia 920 with his car (with both wheels), smacks it with a wooden plank across a parking lot, tosses it into the air and lets it hit the pavement, and throws it against a light post. How much stress can the Lumia 920 withstand? The torture video follows below. More →

Nokia Samsung Rivalry Analysis

Nokia vs. Samsung: Lumia 920 narrows consumer interest gap with Galaxy Note II

Nokia vs. Samsung: Lumia 920 narrows consumer interest gap with Galaxy Note II

One key smartphone war of this quarter is being waged by Nokia’s Lumia 920 and Samsung’s Note II. Nokia (NOK) is a fading champion that used to hold 60% of the world’s smartphone market. Samsung (005930) is the new volume leader and its share of the world’s smartphone market topped 30% in last quarter. Their vanguard models for the Christmas quarter are important for different reasons. The Lumia 920 tests Nokia’s ability to challenge its Asian rivals globally at a relatively high price point. The Galaxy Note II is Samsung’s attempt to reduce its dependence on its monster blockbuster, the Galaxy S series. More →

Demand for Nokia’s Lumia 920 gives Windows Phone 8 a fighting chance against iOS, Android

Baffling U.S. launch and relatively bleak projections aside, Nokia’s (NOKLumia 920 appears to be off to a good start if U.S. availability – or lack thereof – is any indication. According to TheNextWeb, the Lumia 920 is sold out on Amazon (AMZN) with two-week ship times and AT&T (T) only has the white model in stock. A quick check on Best Buy’s (BBY) website shows it still has plenty of Windows Phone 8-powered Lumia 920s in stock, though. More →

Taking the pulse of Nokia’s Lumia sales in the U.S. and Europe

Taking the pulse of Nokia’s Lumia sales in the U.S. and Europe

In the United States, Nokia’s (NOK) Lumia 920 is holding the top two positions on the Amazon (AMZN) chart of AT&T (T) phones sold with two-year plans. The blue and black versions of the 920 are at No.5 and No.6 among all cell phones sold with contracts. Interestingly, the third hottest AT&T phone, the Samsung (005930) Galaxy Note II, is at No.11 in Amazon’s universal chart. This would seem to hint that there is some space between sales volumes of the 920 and the Note II. More →

Windows Phone 8 Reboots Battery Life

Windows Phone 8 devices plagued by random reboots, poor battery life

Windows Phone 8 devices plagued by random reboots, poor battery life

Smartphones running Microsoft’s (MSFT) Windows Phone 8 operating system have been available for a little over two weeks now, and while sales may be better than some expected, consumers are reporting a number of technical problems. Threads complaining about random reboots and poor battery life on Microsoft’s official support forums, along with other communities, have garnered hundreds of replies. HTC Windows Phone 8X owners are reporting random reboots while using their devices, while Nokia Lumia 920 users have seen random reboots, freezes and poor battery life. In an attempt to rid themselves of these persistent problems, Lumia owners attempted to wipe their devices, but some have subsequently found that the device won’t boot up and they are left stuck at Nokia’s splash screen. A Microsoft spokesperson confirmed to ZDNet that the company is currently “investigating reports of these incidents.”

Windows 8 sales disappoint while Windows Phone 8-powered Lumia 920 sales look strong

In a curious turn of events, Microsoft’s (MSFT) new desktop and tablet operating system is reportedly missing internal sales projections while Windows Phone 8, a mobile platform many industry watchers expected to flounder as its predecessors have, may be off to a stronger than expected start. Paul Thorrott’s Supersite for Windows reported late last week that Windows 8 is not off to a good start, claiming “sales of Windows 8 PCs are well below Microsoft’s internal projections and have been described inside the company as disappointing.” More →

Nokia’s Lumia 920 and the struggle for attention in major markets

In order to gauge overall consumer interest in Nokia’s (NOK) new flagship model in different geographic regions, I decided to conduct a Google (GOOG) Trends search comparing relative search volumes for some major smartphone brands: “Galaxy S3″, “iPhone 5“, “Note 2″, “Lumia 920” and “Sony Xperia”. The date for search volume comparison was set at November 10. Results were checked for anomalies via searches on countries in the same geographic regions (France, UK, Malaysia, Philippines, Chile, etc.). The following four tidbits stood out.

The strange US launch of Nokia’s Lumia 920

The new Lumia 920, Nokia’s (NOK) flagship Windows device, is getting some decent marketing backing from leading American vendors. Best Buy (BBY) is hyping Windows phones at the top of its mobile phone page. Walmart is also promoting Windows phones at the top of its mobile phone page. The problem here is that the best-selling phone charts of both of these mainstream phone sites do not reflect any early impact by the Lumia 920.  More →

Nokia smartphone sales said to remain weak despite ‘impressive’ new Lumia 920, Lumia 820

Nokia’s (NOK) next-generation Lumia smartphones have begun rolling out around the world and while early reviews have been impressed with Nokia’s solid hardware and class leading PureView camera technology, some industry watchers still doubt that the phones will find success in a market dominated by Samsung (005930) and Apple (AAPL). In a recent note to clients, Canaccord Genuity analyst T. Michael Walkely wrote that he is quite impressed with Nokia’s new Windows Phone 8 handsets but he doesn’t see sales improving much in 2013.
