Intel: Acer, ASUS and Lenovo to launch sub-$1,000 Ultrabooks in Q4

Acer, ASUS and Lenovo will launch Intel-powered “Ultrabooks” priced below $1,000 during the fourth quarter of this year, Intel’s executive vice president Sean Maloney said during an event in Taipei. Several of Intel’s other partners aren’t as sure they will be able to hit that price target. DigiTimes said the bill of materials to build an 11.6-inch Ultrabook exceeds $700, which doesn’t leave a lot of room for profits. However, Intel did recently announced that it will invest $300 million in its Ultrabook initiative during the next three to four years, which could be used to offer manufacturers a subsidy per unit for marketing efforts. That, in turn, might help Intel’s partners keep their devices priced below $1,000. Intel hopes its new Ultrabooks will grab a 40% share of the notebook market by the end of 2012. More →

Intel to invest $300 million in Ultrabooks

Intel to invest $300 million in Ultrabooks

Intel will invest $300 million during the next three to four years in an effort to speed up the development of its new “Ultrabook” category of laptops, Bloomberg reported on Thursday. Intel will provide its hardware and software partners with funding and hopes that the cash will be enough for its partners to develop Ultrabooks that can last a full day on a single charge. “The Intel Capital Ultrabook fund will focus on investing in companies building technologies that will help revolutionize the computing experience and morph today’s mobile computers into the next ‘must have’ device,” Intel Capital Corp. executive vice president Arvind Sodhani told Bloomberg. Intel began discussing the new Ultrabook category during the Computex trade show in March. It hopes the computers will grab 40% of the consumer laptop market by the end of next year and says the devices will combine the performance of today’s laptops with a tablet-like experience in a thin and light product. Recent reports have suggested that Acer, ASUS, Dell, Lenovo and HP will begin mass producing Ultrabooks in September and ASUS’ UX21 is expected to be the first model to hit the market. More →

Mass production of Intel ultrabooks slated for September

Mass production of Intel ultrabooks slated for September

Acer, ASUS, Dell, Lenovo and HP will begin to mass produce Intel-powered ultrabooks in September, on schedule for a second-half launch, DigiTimes reported on Tuesday. ASUS’ UX21 ultrabook will be the first such device to market, despite reports to the contrary that HP would release its device before ASUS. Instead, HP’s ultrabook may not launch until the fourth quarter or early next year, a far cry from the original rumored August launch date. Models from Acer and Dell could be late to the market, too, due to slower than expected panel production. Intel introduced its ultrabook roadmap in May and hopes the devices, which will be powered by the company’s latest Core processors and 22nm Ivy Bridge processor, will dominate 40% of the consumer market by the end of 2012. Global PC market shows growth in Q2; Lenovo wins globally, Apple wins in U.S.

Global PC market shows growth in Q2; Lenovo wins globally, Apple wins in U.S.

Market research firms Gartner and IDC have both released preliminary data for global PC sales in the second quarter of 2011, and the reports paint a much improved picture compared to the first quarter of the year. Lenovo was the biggest winner globally in terms of growth according to Gartner, having shipped 10.23 million PCs for a 12% share of the market. The China-based vendor’s PC market share grew a whopping 22.5% compared to the same quarter a year prior, and Lenovo now finds itself in the No. 3 spot globally. HP was still the top vendor with shipments totaling 14.89 million units, and Dell remained in the No. 2 spot with 10.62 million units shipped. Acer and ASUS rounded out the top-5 with 9.30 million units and 4.47 million units, respectively. Though Apple’s operating system share continued to climb last month, the firm still doesn’t sell enough units to bump it from the “Others” category on Gartner’s global table. In the U.S., however, Apple showed the biggest market share gains last quarter with 8.5% growth over the same quarter last year. While IDC’s numbers vary compared to Gartner’s, the end results are the same. IDC has Lenovo’s global growth pegged at 22.9% over the second quarter last year, and it shows that Apple grew even faster than Gartner estimates with 14.7% growth in the U.S. compared to the same quarter a year prior. The two firms agree that Acer was the biggest loser globally. Acer’s share of the worldwide PC market was down 20.4% from the second quarter of 2010 according to Gartner, and down a less alarming 10.1% according to IDC. Taiwan-based Acer was the biggest loser in the U.S. as well, as its share was down 22.6% year-over-year according to Gartner and 25.4% according to IDC. Full press releases from both firms follow below. Tablets fuel 7% growth in global PC market, report says

Tablets fuel 7% growth in global PC market, report says

According to a new report issued by Canalys today, the global PC market grew 7% during the first quarter of this year – largely fueled by tablets. There were 88.6 million PC shipments during the quarter, up from 82.8 million during the same quarter last year. HP had a 66% share of the shipments, followed by Acer (12.8%), Dell (11.3%), Apple (9.5%), Lenovo (9.2%), and others (40.6%). “Apple set the standard in the pad market, mainly at the expense of notebook and netbook shipments, as pads competed for a share of consumer IT spend,” Canalys said, noting that Apple’s iPad products accounted for 74% of the 6.4 million tablets shipped globally in Q1. “The [tablet] represents a real threat to PC and consumer electronics vendors, as it is capable of replacing devices in a range of other categories,” Tim Coulling, a Canalys analyst, said. Lenovo has ThinkPad tablet in the works, report suggests

It looks like PC manufacturer Lenovo is planning to throw its hat into the tablet ring, and a detailed report filed by This is my next explains what the Chinese OEM may have up its sleeve. According to the blog, Lenovo is working on a 10.1-inch, NVIDIA Tegra 2 powered slate that packs quite a punch. The device, which will run Google’s Honeycomb operating system, will come in one of three now-standard tablet storage configurations: 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB and has a target release date of July. The aforementioned 10.1-inch IPS window will boast as 1280 x 800 pixel resolution which will facilitate control of the tablet’s hardware features: 3G and 4G cellular connectivity, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, full-sized SD card slot, HDMI-out, and a laptop-like docking station. The tablet, like much of Lenovo’s hardware, seems to be geared towards the corporate buyer — there are slides dedicated to Cisco, McAfee and Symantec integration and security. But if we know our readers (and we think we do), there will be a few of you adding this tablet to your technology war chest upon its release. More →

iPad causes U.S. PC market to dive; Apple, Toshiba only winners

iPad causes U.S. PC market to dive; Apple, Toshiba only winners

Apple’s iPad has left the traditional PC market in a state of flux and in a painful bit of irony for Apple’s competition, the Cupertino company is also one of the few manufacturers whose traditional PC business managed to grow last quarter. Research firm IDC released its first-quarter figures on Wednesday and detailed bleak times for the bulk of PC makers in the U.S. and globally. Stateside, Apple and Toshiba were the only companies with significant market shares whose shipments grew year-over-year; Apple’s shipments climbed 9.6% to 1.375 million units and Toshiba shipped 1.663 million units for a 10.4% increase. Overall however, the market was down 10.7%, with Dell and Acer having recorded the biggest loses. Dell’s shipments declined 11.8% while Acer’s U.S. PC shipments slid a massive 42.1% year-over-year, from 2.298 million units in the first quarter of 2010 to 1.331 million in the same quarter this year. Globally, Lenovo was the biggest winner as its shipments grew an impressive 16.3% to 8.172 million units. Acer was again the biggest loser, with total shipments dropping 15.8% from 10.733 million units in the first quarter last year to 9.039 million units in the first quarter of 2011. Lenovo planning 23-inch tablet for 2011 launch

Lenovo planning 23-inch tablet for 2011 launch

While most manufacturers are trying to find the sweet spot for tablets in the 7-inch to 10-inch range, Lenovo’s thinking bigger. The firm’s senior marketing specialist, Wiliam Cai, said that his company is working on a new 23-inch tablet designed for the home — with a focus similar to that of an all-in-one desktop — that could land later this year. “We think that there is potential for a 23-inch tablet,” Cai told TechRadar. “We’d have to take care of battery life and we are working to get the weight down.” Cai said such a device could be moved around the house, and possibly be used as a TV or with a full keyboard. That sounds more like a connected TV than a tablet to us, but we’re excited to see where Lenovo takes this idea. It’s unclear what sort of operating system Lenovo has in mind, but we’re guessing it’ll probably run Windows 7. More →

Canalys: Tablets drive 19% Q4 growth in global PC market; Apple takes No. 3 spot from Dell

Canalys: Tablets drive 19% Q4 growth in global PC market; Apple takes No. 3 spot from Dell

Led by tremendous continued demand for Apple’s iPad, tablet sales helped drive impressive 19% fourth-quarter growth in the global PC market according to research firm Canalys. Strong Mac and iPad sales resulted in 241% growth year-over-year for the Cupertino-based company, which passed Dell this quarter to become the third-largest PC vender in the world. Shipments jumped from 3.4 million to 11.5 million units, and Apple now owns 10.8% of the global PC market. Ahead of Apple is Acer, which saw 8.8% growth year-over-year in the fourth quarter. The company shipped 13.6 million PCs amounting to 12.8% of the global market. Atop the list with 17.7% of the market is HP, which shipped 18.7 million computers in the fourth quarter. Year-over-year growth slowed to 2.9%, however, while companies like Dell and Lenovo showed double-digit growth. HP plans to enter the tablet market in the first half of this year, and it is expected to announce its first tablet devices at a press event next month.

As to whether or not tablets like the Apple iPad should be included in PC sales figures, Canalys Senior Analyst Daryl Chiam addresses the question quite well: “Any argument that a pad is not a PC is simply out of sync,” Chiam said in a statement. “With screen sizes of seven inches or above, ample processing power, and a growing number of applications, pads offer a computing experience comparable to netbooks. They compete for the same customers and will happily coexist. As with smart phones, some users will require a physical keyboard, while others will do without.” Hit the break for Canalys’ full release. More →

Apple takes #3 spot for portables?

Apple takes #3 spot for portables?

According to Deutsche Bank in a note sent out to clients, Apple’s combined iPad and MacBook / MacBook Pro market share puts them right ahead Asus, Toshiba, Dell, and Lenovo globally. Obviously you have to be willing to classify iPad tablet devices in the category as laptops and notebooks, but it isn’t exactly far-fetched. Especially when customers are buying iPads over a new netbook or in some cases laptops. The jump to the #3 spot (again, if you classify iPads as portables) pulls Apple up from the #7 slot globally, and it doesn’t look like Apple’s piece of the pie will be sliding any time soon. “Retail checks suggest this share shift continues in July.” The only two companies in front of Apple in this non-standard market share survey? Acer and Hewlett Packard. Let’s see what a Retina display-equipped, FaceTime-toting new iPad will do the market then, shall we? More →

When the news officially broke that HP had put in a winning bid for Palm, it all seemed so simple. But according to a recent SEC filing from Palm, what really took place in weeks leading up to HP’s successful bid was a five company bidding war. Click through to get all the facts straight from the horse’s mouth. HTC drops its bid for Palm as Lenovo emerges as front-runner

palm-logo

According to a report from Reuters, HTC has dropped the idea of acquiring Palm after a close examining the ailing company’s books. Reuters quoted an unnamed source in Taiwan who was involved in the dead deal as saying “there just weren’t enough synergies to take the deal forward.” This means HTC has joined a growing list of companies that have decided against making a bid for Palm including Dell and Huawei. The CEO of Huawei-rival ZTE informed Reuters his company has not made a move. At present it seems Lenovo, which had over $2.4 billion in cash reserves at the end of 2009, is the new front-runner having said to be entertaining the idea of making an offer to the tune of $1.3 billion dollar, or 30% above Palm’s market cap. Shares in Lenovo rose in Asia on the news. More →
