T-Mobile hooking up unlocked iPhone subscribers with LTE this week

If you’re a T-Mobile subscriber who’s been accessing the carrier’s HSPA+ network with an unlocked iPhone 5, don’t worry about having to buy a whole new device to use its recently launched LTE network. TmoNews reports that T-Mobile will push out an update to its unlocked iPhone 5 subscribers on April 5th that will give the device access to the AWS spectrum bands used for T-Mobile’s LTE services. Of course, since T-Mobile’s LTE network is only live in seven markets right now, you’ll probably still be relying on HSPA+ connectivity even after installing the update this week. TmoNews also says that the update will also give unlocked iPhone 5 users access to Visual Voicemail “among other features.”

Samsung Galaxy S 4 crushes iPhone 5, other leading phones in early performance tests

Samsung’s (005930) Galaxy S 4 might not offer much in the way of an exciting new exterior design, but inside, it’s a completely different story. The retooled internals on the U.S. version of the Galaxy S 4 were put to the test by benchmark specialists Primate Labs and the results are impressive, to say the least. The Galaxy S 4 scored a 3,163 on the standard Geekbench 2 speed test, just shy of twice the iPhone 5′s score of 1,596. That score was also good enough to top the upcoming HTC One, the Nexus 4 and the previous-generation Galaxy S III. The chart below shows the Galaxy S 4′s results compared to other leading smartphones tested by Primate Labs. Report claims iPhone 5, the best-selling smartphone in the world, will ultimately disappoint

As analysts continue to hit Apple (AAPL) hard, a new report claims the postmortem ultimately written on the iPhone 5 will reveal disappointing sales relative to initial expectations. Market research firm Strategy Analytics recently released a report claiming that Apple’s latest iPhone was the best-selling smartphone in the world during the holiday quarter last year, allowing Apple to reclaim the No.1 spot after Samsung’s (005930) Galaxy S III stole the crown earlier in 2012. Despite the phone’s current popularity, however, Raymond James analyst Tavis McCourt believes the phone will ultimately disappoint. More →

iPhone 5 found to dominate all other smartphones again in February

A recent report suggested Apple’s (AAPL) latest iPhone reclaimed the title of top-selling smartphone in the world last quarter, and the popular handset apparently maintained its momentum in the U.S. last month. Canaccord Genuity analyst T. Michael Walkley issued his monthly handset sales estimates for the month of February early Monday morning, and he found that Apple’s iPhone 5 was the best-selling smartphone at each of the three major U.S. carriers where the phone is sold. Despite rumored of declining demand, Apple’s iPhone 5 is the No.1 smartphone in the world

An unexpected decline in demand for Apple’s (AAPL) latest iPhone model was one of many rumors floated by analysts in the fourth quarter as big hedge funds dumped Apple shares for billions in profit. Apple’s stock plummeted 30% during the sell-off, but speculation surrounding iPhone 5 sales was way off base according to a new report. Market research firm Strategy Analytics on Wednesday issued a report suggesting Apple’s iPhone 5 overtook the Samsung (005930) Galaxy S III by a wide margin in the fourth quarter to become the best-selling smartphone in the world. Foxconn reportedly freezes hiring as Apple cuts iPhone 5 orders [updated]

Original device manufacturer Foxconn has reportedly put a hold on hiring new workers after Apple (AAPL), its largest client, cut iPhone 5 production. The Financial Times relayed the report on Wednesday, citing statements made in internal notices circulated at Foxconn. “Currently, none of the plants in mainland China have hiring plans,” a Foxconn spokesperson told FT, and hiring will reportedly be on hold until “at least the end of March.” It is unclear if the reduced iPhone 5 orders were planned or if production was trimmed recently in response to declining demand. Four Android smartphones lead the iPhone 5 in customer satisfaction ratings

Apple (AAPL) is traditionally ranked near the top in satisfaction surveys due to the simplistic nature of its products. A recent polls suggests that the company’s latest smartphone isn’t doing as well as its competitors, however. According to OnDevice Research, four Android smartphones were found to have higher customer satisfaction ratings than the iPhone 5 in the United States. The research firm found that consumers were happiest with Motorola’s Atrix HD and DROID Razr M, followed by HTC’s (2498) Rezound 4G, and Samsung’s (005930) Galaxy Note 2. The iPhone 5′s rating of 8.23 was only good enough for the No.5 spot. More →

The best news for Apple: The iPhone is still generating monster profits

Many expected a black Christmas for the iPhone average sales prices. CIRP had estimated that the iPhone 5 portion of total iPhone sales had dropped below 70%. The 64 GB version of the iPhone 5 was projected to have sold far worse than the 64 GB version of the iPhone 4S the year before. Some brokerages were whispering that iPhone 5 might be close to 50% of the total iPhone volume. More →

iPhone 5 demand again said to be waning as customers flock to cheaper models

UBS is the latest in a long line of me-too firms to trim its outlook on Apple (AAPL) as investor sentiment continues to sour. In a note to clients picked up by Forbes on Tuesday, UBS analyst Steve Milunovich cut his estimates for fiscal 2013 and 2014 after a survey from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners found that consumers are opting for cheaper iPhone models (iPhone 4S and iPhone 4) and iPhone 5 handsets with less storage. If the survey is accurate, both scenarios obviously could have big implications for Apple’s margins. More →

You may want to think twice before switching to Walmart’s Straight Talk for unlimited iPhone 5 service [updated]

Earlier this month, Walmart (WMT) announced the availability of iPhone 5 on its Straight Talk Wireless service. The news was huge for consumers who are interested in Apple’s (AAPL) latest smartphone but are not willing to sign a lengthy and expensive two-year service agreement. Straight Talk’s no-contract plan offers unlimited voice, text and data for a mere $45 a month. Like many other “unlimited” services, however, Straight Talk has some restrictions. More →
