Only 6% of iPad app sessions use 3G or 4G data [infographic]

Apple’s new iPad has already seen massive success, selling over 3 million units in less than four days of availability. The tablet features an updated A5X chip, a beautiful Retina display and 4G LTE connectivity. Due to the blazing fast 4G speeds on Apple’s iPad Wi-Fi + 4G models, it is estimated that half of all new iPads sold will be LTE enabled. Analytics firm Localytics has countered previous reports, however, stating that only 6% of all iPad sessions using apps with its tracking software installed connect to the Internet through a cellular network. The firm found that 89.7% of all iPads are Wi-Fi only, while 8.8% were 3G-enabled and 1.5% included 4G. Users with iPads equipped with 3G use cellular data 45% of the time, while users with 4G devices only utilize LTE 36% of the time. Localytics compiled its connectivity report using data collected between March 16th and March 21st, and the company’s infographic can be found after the break. More →

Inventory shortages, price cuts point to imminent iPad 2 launch

Inventory shortages, price cuts point to imminent iPad 2 launch

As we’re seeing now with Apple’s current MacBook Pro line, delayed shipping dates and sell-outs are often good indicators of an imminent product refresh. Discounts are also a good sign that a popular product is nearing the end of its life. With that in mind, new reports of retailers and carriers showing dwindling iPad inventory or discounting Apple’s tablet could be indicative of an impending next-generation iPad announcement. 9 to 5 Mac reports that British retail giant Carphone Warehouse is sold out of the 64GB iPad Wi-Fi as well as each of the three iPad Wi-Fi + 3G models. Carriers Orange and T-Mobile have slashed prices on current iPad inventory in half, so customers can now get an iPad for as little as £99.99 on a two-year contract. Finally, European retailer Ingram Micro is sold out of three iPad models, and is showing low inventory on the other three versions of the iPad. Apple is expected to launch the iPad 2 in March, though the company has not made any official information available surrounding the device. More →

Apple drops prices on refurbished iPads; $70 to $100 off

Apple further reduced its pricing on refurbished iPad models this week, offering discounts of up to $100 off the price of a new iPad. The price drops only apply to the iPad Wi-Fi models, and total discounts range from $70 to $100. Pricing is now as follows:

  • Refurbished iPad Wi-Fi (16GB): $429
  • Refurbished iPad Wi-Fi (32GB): $499
  • Refurbished iPad Wi-Fi (64GB): $599

The discount applied to refurbished iPad Wi-Fi + 3G models remains at $50, and there has been no indication that Apple might lower pricing on the 3G models any further. Apple’s website notes that reduced pricing on its refurbished iPad Wi-Fi models is only applicable for a limited time, though it does not specify when the promotion will end. All refurbished iPads purchased directly from Apple come with a new battery, a new outer case and a 1-year warranty. More →

80 days. That’s all it took Apple to sell 3 million iPads the world over. Who knows how many it would have sold if it weren’t for that pesky 7 to 10 day shipping delay. In other iPad related news, the Cupertino company also announced today that there are now more than 11,000 native iPad applications in the iTunes App Store. More →

Yes, the delay sure does suck, but everyone living in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the UK will be able to grab an iPad to call their own on Friday, May 28. Just don’t bother calling your local Apple Store to ask how much it’ll set you back because pricing will be announced at a later date. Live elsewhere? If so, we sure hope its either Austria, Belgium, Hong Kong, Ireland, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand or Singapore as they’re all penciled in to get the iPad come July. Just promise us you’ll play it safe and pre-order, okay? We wouldn’t want anyone to get left behind.

UPDATE: And we’ve got pricing. Since we’re an English-speaking blog we’ll stick to Canada and the UK. Check it out after the jump. More →
